An 18-year-old student worker, Kobe, made an extraordinary discovery while participating in a routine sewage project in Sint-Gillis-Dendermonde, situated in East Flanders. Alongside a colleague, Kobe uncovered a hidden stash of gold believed to be valued at approximately 9 million euros. This revelation occurred earlier in the week, as reported by several Belgian media outlets.

While excavating the foundations of a historic building, the pair found gold coins, nuggets, and bullion bars concealed within a cellar wall. Initially, Kobe mistook the coins for regular one-euro pieces until the presence of a gold nugget made him realise they had stumbled upon something immensely valuable.

“Our initial reaction was disbelief and amazement,” Kobe commented during an interview with Belgian public broadcaster VRT. The sheer value of the find left him stunned, leading him to understand that keeping the gold would be implausible.

Details of the Discovery

The extraordinary hoard was located at a former brewery site on Van Langenhovestraat, approximately 30 kilometres north-west of Brussels. Originally constructed as an opulent villa in the late 19th century for brewery proprietor Theophilus Van Assche, the property is currently owned by CAW Oost-Vlaanderen, an organisation that offers social support in Dendermonde.

Reports indicate that the gold was hidden inside a bag and sealed within a bricked-up area of the cellar wall. The treasure included hundreds of gold coins, a variety of nuggets, and numbered gold bars. Upon realising the magnitude of their find, the workers acknowledged that claiming the gold for personal gain was not an option.

“The quantity of coins and bars is substantial—it would be nearly impossible to keep them hidden,” remarked site manager Mario when speaking to VRT.

Currently, the workers await further developments in this fascinating case involving the potential 9 million euros treasure.
