Gitanjali Angmo, the wife of Sonam Wangchuk, has openly condemned the central government’s handling of ongoing protests concerning the alleged NEET-UG 2026 paper leak. She stated that the government has “failed miserably” to meet the expectations of young people across India. Speaking to ANI on July 20, Angmo emphasised that the protests have now evolved into a nationwide movement that seeks accountability and reforms in the educational system.

Angmo claimed that the government’s approach of force could not stifle a widespread youth uprising. She mentioned that protesters are currently awaiting a response from the government, but expressed that the movement has already garnered significant support from across the nation. She asserted, “This is a movement that has caught the imagination of the entire nation,” highlighting participation from diverse groups and regions.

Protests and Calls for Educational Reforms

During her conversation with the media, Angmo described attempts by the government to restrict transportation options, including shutting down the metro and rideshare services, which she deemed ineffective. She noted that despite these logistical challenges, a substantial number of individuals still participated in the protests, indicating the movement’s strength and resolve.

Angmo elaborated on the need for educational reforms, stating that the youth of the country represent its most valuable asset. They deserve an environment that supports their growth and addresses their challenges rather than silencing their voices. “We should give them the right ecosystem and the right education so that they can achieve their potential,” she remarked, urging the government to take notice of the reality represented by the diverse groups gathering for the campaign.

She reiterated the call for systemic reforms and stated that the government should recognize the protest as a wake-up call. Angmo asserted that the response from the government should reflect its commitment to uplifting the aspirations of the youth instead of employing force and misinformation.

Calls for Accountability and Activism for Change

Angmo’s statements followed a meeting between a delegation from the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) and Union Health Minister JP Nadda. The delegation put forth several demands, including the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and financial compensation of Rs 1 crore for the families of NEET aspirants who are believed to have suffered fatalities related to the ongoing situation.

Sonam Wangchuk, who is currently on the 23rd day of his hunger strike, has also been vocal about the need for the youth to express their concerns directly to Members of Parliament. He has called for permission for youth leaders to meet with lawmakers, asserting that their voices must be heard as part of the democratic process. Wangchuk’s fast continues until these conditions are met, reflecting his commitment to advocating for the youth’s rights.

Amid heightened security in the national capital, calls for reform and dialogue have persisted, with demonstrators seeking to convey their grievances effectively and constructively. Angmo’s remarks bring critical attention to the broader implications of the protests, as well as the urgent need for a responsive education system that aligns with the aspirations of the younger generation.
