SIT Expected to Submit Interim Report on Ram Temple Donation Investigation to Supreme Court

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) that is examining allegations of misappropriation related to donations for the Ram temple is anticipated to present an interim status report to the Supreme Court on Monday. This submission is in accordance with the directions issued by the court, as reported by sources on Friday.

In light of the ongoing inquiry, the SIT may also request additional time from the Uttar Pradesh government to conclude its investigation into the financial discrepancies associated with donations made to the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust. This request aligns with the complexity of the cases under review.

The Supreme Court recently conducted hearings on petitions that advocate for a thorough and prompt investigation into the alleged misappropriation. During these proceedings, the court instructed the SIT to submit a detailed status report for its consideration.

Formation and Composition of the SIT

The Uttar Pradesh government established the three-member SIT on June 13, following a request from the temple trust. The team consists of key officials, including Lucknow Divisional Commissioner Vijay Vishwas Pant, Inspector General of Police Kiran S, and Special Secretary (Finance) Neel Ratan. Initially, the SIT was allotted a period of 15 days to conclude its inquiry, a timeframe that was later extended by an additional 15 days.

Following the initiation of the investigation, the SIT submitted a preliminary nine-page report to the state government on June 23. This report prompted the registration of a First Information Report (FIR), which subsequently led to the arrests of eight individuals. The investigators also identified and recovered cash that had allegedly been misappropriated from temple donations.

The inquiry has already instigated significant changes, including the resignation of former trust general secretary Champat Rai and former trustee Anil Mishra from their respective positions within the trust. This shift highlights the ongoing concerns over transparency and accountability within the temple management.

Future Developments and Oversight

As the inquiry progresses, it is widely reported that the final SIT report will likely advocate for reforms aimed at enhancing the temple’s administrative practices as well as the mechanisms for counting and monitoring donations. A meeting of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust is scheduled to take place in Ayodhya on July 22 to review the findings and evaluate potential corrective measures.

Currently, the Supreme Court continues to preside over petitions calling for a court-monitored Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) examination, a comprehensive forensic audit, and a thorough assessment by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) regarding the trust’s financial activities. The petitioners have raised questions about the validity of the SIT’s inquiry, notably concerning its commencement prior to the registration of an FIR.

The ongoing situation is closely watched as it revolves around the SIT’s imminent interim report and its anticipated request for additional time to complete the investigation. The Supreme Court’s ongoing involvement will ensure continued scrutiny of the process, underlining the significance of transparent handling of the allegations surrounding the management of temple funds.
