Shraddha Kapoor’s Eetha Faces Controversy Over Title

The CSR Journal Magazine

Shraddha Kapoor’s upcoming biopic titled Eetha, which aims to showcase the life of renowned Marathi folk artist Vithabai Bhau Mang Narayangaonkar, is presently embroiled in a title-related dispute. The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Vithabai’s family have expressed their concerns about the film’s title, asserting that it should honour the artist’s legacy and contribution to Marathi culture.

Suhas Suryavanshi, Mumbai President (Culture) of the NCP (Sharad Pawar faction), has been vocally critical of the film. He stated that while the effort to narrate Vithabai’s story is commendable, the filmmakers are urged to ensure that her dignity and legacy are appropriately represented. He remarked that Vithabai holds a significant place in Marathi folk culture, often regarded as the Lavani Samratni of Maharashtra.

The NCP’s demand highlights the need for sensitive treatment of artistic legacies in cinema, especially when a film’s aim is to depict a historical figure. Suryavanshi emphasised that the film must reflect the honour that Vithabai deserves, noting that titling the film after her would be a fitting tribute to her contributions.

Vithabai’s Dedication to Performance

Suryavanshi further elaborated on Vithabai’s commitment to her craft, recounting her remarkable dedication. He highlighted a particular incident when she performed shortly after giving birth. According to him, Vithabai viewed her performances as a duty and, after going into labour, immediately returned to the stage to complete her act, demonstrating her dedication to her art.

This story, among many others, showcases Vithabai’s relentless passion for performance and ensures that her legacy continues to inspire future generations. Her life is not only a testament to her artistic prowess but also a reflection of her personal sacrifices for the art form she cherished.

Suryavanshi’s comments underline the significance of preserving such narratives and ensuring they are accurately depicted in film. He suggested that filmmakers should maintain the integrity of Vithabai’s story by resisting the temptation to fictionalise essential elements of her life.

Concerns Over Title and Storytelling Approach

He stated that it is not just the title that merits discussion but also the overall representation of Vithabai’s life and contributions in the biopic. He called upon the filmmakers to organise screenings for individuals connected to Vithabai before the film’s general release, pressing that this was a fair expectation for those who respect her legacy.

The sentiment surrounding the film aims to bridge the gap between artistic interpretation and historical accuracy. By inviting the family and cultural representatives to engage with the project, the filmmakers may foster a sense of collaboration and respect for Vithabai’s legacy.

About Vithabai Narayangaonkar

Vithabai Narayangaonkar is celebrated as one of Maharashtra’s most prominent folk artists, often referred to as the Tamasha Samratni. Her life serves as an inspiring narrative of dedication and commitment within the folk arts. Stories such as her post-birth return to the stage illustrate her profound connection to her art, further solidifying her status as a cultural icon.

The film, Eetha, is set to release in cinemas on August 28, 2026, but as of now, the filmmakers have not responded to requests for comments regarding the title controversy. The development of this biopic will be closely monitored as it navigates the complexities of representing a revered figure in Marathi culture.
