Shaheen Afridi Fined PKR 1 Million by Lahore Qalandars for PSL Security Breach

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Lahore Qalandars have levied a fine of PKR 1 million on their captain, Shaheen Shah Afridi, due to a violation of security protocols during the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL). This action comes after Punjab police accused Afridi of breaching established security rules at the players’ hotel.

The incident allegedly involved unauthorized visitors being allowed access to a player’s hotel room despite explicit refusals from security officials associated with the PSL and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). In an official statement, the Lahore Qalandars noted that the fine was enacted to reinforce discipline and accountability within the team.

Misunderstanding

The organization emphasized that the situation stemmed from a misunderstanding rather than an intentional disregard of established protocols,” the statement explained. It further reiterated the team’s commitment to following security protocols and acknowledged the necessity for clear communication to avoid future incidents.

The incident reportedly occurred on a Saturday night when four visitors, who were acquaintances of player Sikandar Raza, spent approximately three hours in a player’s room. This transpired despite several refusals from both the PCB’s security manager and PSL CEO Salman Naseer regarding the visitors’ access.

Details of the Incident

The controversy began when the team’s liaison officer sought permission for Raza’s companions to visit the hotel room. This request was denied due to security concerns, and a later appeal made by team owner Sameen Rana to PSL management was also declined. Despite these rejections, both Afridi and Raza allegedly proceeded to bring the visitors into the players’ area, reportedly disregarding objections from on-duty security personnel.

According to a letter issued by Punjab police and shared on social media, while Raza had claimed that the visitors were in the room for about 40 minutes, police reports indicated their stay lasted nearly three hours. The authorities characterized the actions of Afridi and Raza as a flouting of security protocols intended to safeguard players and officials.

Public discourse

While the Lahore Qalandars acknowledged the breach, they asserted that public discourse around the incident had exaggerated the reality, and the matter was not as severe as portrayed. The organization reiterated its respect for security procedures and emphasized the need for greater clarity in communication regarding protocols to prevent further occurrences.

During a press conference, Sikandar Raza accepted responsibility for the infraction and sought to clear Afridi of blame. The Lahore Qalandars, however, have not imposed any disciplinary measures against Raza for this incident. The statement from the team stressed that the breach was a result of a misunderstanding and reiterated the necessity of adhering to standard operating procedures.
