Bihar is currently facing a flood threat as the water level of the Ganga continues to rise. The administration has placed eight districts on high alert, including Bhojpur, Patna, Saran, Vaishali, Nalanda, Begusarai, Lakhisarai, and Jehanabad. This decision comes amid concerns over potential flooding in various areas, necessitating proactive measures to prevent loss and ensure safety.

Authorities have instructed local officials to inform residents in low-lying areas about the escalating water levels. Local elected representatives have been engaged to facilitate awareness campaigns. Moreover, information regarding flood conditions is being disseminated through traditional media, social media platforms, and public announcement systems to keep the population informed.

Monitoring Rising Water Levels

The Water Resources Department has highlighted the critical status of the Ganga water level, particularly in Patna. Forecasts indicate that the river may surpass its Highest Flood Level (HFL) at Gandhi Ghat by Thursday night. In Mokama, the anticipated crossing of the HFL may occur on Friday afternoon. Reports indicate that the Ganga water level was recorded at 49.40 metres on the morning of September 1, rising to 49.98 metres by the evening of September 2, and reaching 50.18 metres by the morning of September 3. As of noon on Thursday, this level had increased to 50.25 metres, now marking a rise of approximately 1.65 metres above the danger threshold.

In response to the situation, Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary visited the riverfront to assess the rising water levels and the preparations in place for flood-prone areas. He has directed officials to expedite all necessary preparations and maintain a state of alertness. The Chief Minister also emphasised the importance of ensuring that safe shelters, medical facilities, drinking water, and essential supplies are ready for any areas that may be impacted.

In the event of an emergency, plans are in place for evacuating residents in vulnerable regions. The authorities have engaged teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to assist with evacuation and rescue operations if required. Additionally, the Water Resources Department has been tasked with closely monitoring the safety of embankments throughout the state.

Political Reactions and Safety Precautions

The Leader of the Opposition, Tejashwi Yadav, has publicly condemned the NDA government’s handling of the flood situation. He noted that several rivers, including the Ganga, are now flowing above their danger marks, claiming that over 15 districts are currently facing flood conditions. Yadav accused the government of lacking adequate preparedness for flood management and relief efforts while highlighting public fear due to rising water levels.

Yadav further stated that the floods and erosion in diara regions have submerged crops, resulting in significant challenges for farmers. He reported that several villages have lost contact with block headquarters, disrupting the supply of ration and other essential goods. In light of these difficulties, he has called for immediate official recognition of the diara areas as flood-affected.

In conjunction with the ongoing crisis, the Disaster Management Department has issued safety guidelines for residents living close to the Ganga. People are advised against unnecessary visits to riverbanks, ghats, or any areas prone to flooding. Special precautions are also recommended for children, elderly individuals, and those with disabilities to minimise risks associated with rising waters.

Additionally, Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary plans to conduct an aerial survey of the affected areas at 1 pm on Friday to evaluate the situation further. This will be followed by a high-level review meeting at 2 pm to discuss water levels and preparedness for relief and rescue operations.
