Security at Parliament has been significantly enhanced in response to the escalating protests led by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP). On July 20, multiple entry gates to the parliamentary premises were closed to manage the situation as protest activities intensified. The CJP had organised a ‘Sansad Chalo’ march, drawing numerous activists and supporters to Jantar Mantar. In preparation for the march and the onset of the Monsoon Session, a substantial presence of security personnel was observed, along with rigorous security drills aimed at ensuring the safety of the area.

In light of the protests, the police took precautionary measures to maintain order and facilitate public safety. Earlier in the day, authorities utilised mild force to disperse groups of demonstrators who attempted to approach Parliament House. This led to notable traffic disruptions across the capital as the protests progressed from Jantar Mantar.

The police issued an advisory, stating that any form of public assembly, protests, or demonstrations involving five or more individuals is prohibited outside designated areas unless prior permission is sought. These measures reflect the authorities’ commitment to both maintaining public order and managing the situation surrounding the Monsoon Session, which commenced on the same day.

CJP Leadership Updates and Activities

As the protests continued, CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke officially ended his indefinite hunger strike at the request of fellow activist Sonam Wangchuk, who was hospitalised due to health complications from his own 21-day hunger strike that began on July 18. Wangchuk’s condition reportedly necessitated medical care, prompting Dipke to cease his fast in solidarity and concern for Wangchuk’s health.

On the same day, CJP representatives Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were engaged in discussions with Union Health Minister JP Nadda, aiming to address their long-standing demands regarding examination reforms. Das reported on his official X handle that the government had initiated contact for talks earlier that morning, stating that the youth had gathered in large numbers to assert their demands. Das expressed optimism about engaging in meaningful discussions despite acknowledging that government overtures had come later than desired.

He explicitly stated that the organisation remains open to dialogue with the administration about the ongoing issues affecting the educational framework. Das noted that clarity from the government’s side was still lacking despite the recent attempt to negotiate, reflecting the uncertainty surrounding the situation.

Activist Sonam Wangchuk’s Hospital Appeal

Meanwhile, Sonam Wangchuk appealed to the authorities at Safdarjung Hospital for an early discharge, citing his stable health condition. He communicated via his official X handle, asserting that he felt sufficiently well to participate in the scheduled “Sansad Chalo” march. Wangchuk expressed gratitude for any consideration the hospital staff could offer in allowing him temporary leave to join the protest.

In his note, Wangchuk mentioned, “I am feeling very fine today, and my health parameters are quite normal. Hence, I request you to kindly allow me to leave the hospital, even if temporarily, so that I can join the March to the Parliament.” His endeavour to join the protest indicates the activism focus of the CJP in relation to education reform and youth representation.

The ongoing protests have underscored the broader concerns within the education system, prompting both CJP leaders and activists to galvanise support among the youth. The situation remains dynamic as the CJP continues its efforts to advocate for the fulfilment of their demands.
