A group of Samajwadi Party leaders is set to meet activist Sonam Wangchuk at Medanta Hospital in New Delhi on the evening of Wednesday, July 22. The delegation aims to persuade Wangchuk to conclude his indefinite hunger strike, which he began 25 days ago. Samajwadi Party MP Rajeev Rai confirmed the meeting, stating that a formal written appeal would be presented to the activist. He noted that several MPs have endorsed the appeal, emphasising that Wangchuk’s health takes precedence over the protest.

Wangchuk’s Health Concerns Highlighted

Sonam Wangchuk’s hunger strike has been a focal point of concern, particularly regarding his deteriorating health. On the same day, Abhijeet Dipke, an activist from the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), publicly requested Wangchuk to end his fast. Dipke’s appeal followed rising worries about the consequences of 25 days without food. He conveyed that while the movement at Jantar Mantar will persist, Wangchuk’s life is of paramount importance.

In a statement shared on social media platform X, Dipke articulated deep concern for Wangchuk’s well-being and reaffirmed the objectives of the ongoing demonstrations. He stated, “We request @Wangchuk66 sir to end his hunger strike. The country needs him, and his life is too precious to risk further.” His words underscored the commitment to ensuring accountability while also prioritising Wangchuk’s health.

Despite the plea for Wangchuk to conclude his fast, Dipke assured supporters that the movement would continue unabated. He remarked, “I don’t want anything to happen to Sonam Sir… even if Sonam Sir breaks his hunger strike, we will continue our protest until Dharmendra Pradhan resigns.” This indicates a firm stance on the part of the protestors, who plan to maintain their peaceful demonstrations until their demands are met.

Government Officials Visit Wangchuk In Hospital

On Tuesday, July 21, Sonam Wangchuk was relocated from Safdarjung Hospital to Medanta Hospital in Gurugram, following directives from the Delhi High Court. This transfer aims to ensure he receives appropriate medical attention during his fast. Reports indicate that Minister of State for the Prime Minister’s Office, Jitendra Singh, and Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda visited Wangchuk at the hospital to assess his condition.

The visit by high-ranking officials demonstrates the significance of Wangchuk’s situation within the broader context of governmental accountability in educational matters. As the hunger strike continues, it has garnered attention not only from fellow activists and political leaders but also from the general public who are concerned about the implications of prolonged fasting on his health.
