Russia Launches Missile And Drone Attack On Kyiv Ahead Of NATO Summit

The CSR Journal Magazine

Russia launched a large-scale missile and drone attack on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, early on Monday, with explosions reported across the city just a day before a key NATO summit in Turkey that is expected to be attended by US President Donald Trump.

Ukrainian authorities said the assault involved ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and drones. The attack came after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that intelligence assessments indicated Russia was preparing another major strike against Ukraine.

Ballistic Missiles, Drones And Cruise Missiles Used

According to Ukraine’s Air Force, Russia launched a coordinated attack using multiple types of weapons, including ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and drones.

Explosions were heard across central Kyiv during the early hours of Monday as air raid sirens sounded across the capital.

Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko said at least two districts reported fires or damage caused by falling debris following the attack. Authorities did not immediately provide information on casualties.

Zelensky Warned Of Fresh Offensive

The latest strike followed a warning issued by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Sunday, when he said intelligence reports suggested Russia was preparing another large-scale assault.

“Intelligence once again indicates that the Russians are preparing a new massive strike. This is typical of Putin: right after America’s Independence Day and before the NATO Summit in Ankara. Russia wants to bring more evil and kill people,” Zelenskyy wrote on X.

The attack also comes only days after a major Russian strike on Kyiv that killed at least 30 people. According to CNN, it was the third-deadliest assault on the Ukrainian capital since the war began.

NATO Summit To Focus On Ukraine

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is expected to dominate discussions at the NATO summit, which is scheduled to begin on Tuesday in Ankara.

The latest attack comes as Russian forces continue efforts to expand their control over Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region, one of the Kremlin’s principal military objectives.

At the same time, Ukraine has stepped up long-range drone and missile strikes targeting Russian infrastructure, including oil refineries, ports and military production facilities.

Trump-Putin Call Preceded Latest Strike

The renewed escalation follows a phone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump on July 4.

According to Russia’s foreign ministry, the call lasted nearly 90 minutes, during which Trump reiterated his willingness to help bring an end to the war in Ukraine.

The latest missile attack underscores the continued intensity of the conflict as diplomatic efforts to end the war remain stalled and world leaders prepare to discuss the situation at the upcoming NATO summit.
