The recent monsoon season has led to a tragic toll of 183 lives in Himachal Pradesh over a span of 47 days. This information has been revealed by the State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC), which also indicated that the total financial losses due to incidents related to heavy rainfall and natural disasters have exceeded Rs 972 crore since June 30. The Department of Revenue’s Disaster Management Cell has quantified these cumulative losses precisely at Rs 97,263.91 lakh, approximately Rs 972.64 crore, as of August 15.

Out of the total fatalities, 79 were linked directly to natural hazards and various rain-induced incidents, while road accidents accounted for a substantial 104 deaths in the same period. The statistics on natural disasters include 14 lives lost due to landslides, 27 from falls off steep rocks or trees, and 15 related to diverse weather events. Additionally, eight people died from snakebites and electrocutions, five drowned, and one individual lost their life in a flash flood.

Region-Specific Impact and Infrastructure Damage

The regions of Lahaul and Spiti reported the highest death toll from natural hazards, with 14 fatalities. This was followed closely by the Kangra district, which recorded 13 deaths, and Shimla, with 11 casualties. Road accidents have particularly impacted Chamba and Sirmaur, each registering 16 deaths, whereas Kullu reported 14 fatalities.

Injuries have also been significant, with 291 people reported hurt and 31 others still missing. Furthermore, the devastation has extended to livestock; more than 732 animals and 225 poultry birds have been lost throughout this period.

The majority of financial repercussions are reflected in public infrastructure. The Public Works Department (PWD) has reported damages amounting to Rs 73,395.46 lakh, followed by the Jal Shakti Vibhag with Rs 21,640.62 lakh in losses. Additionally, the damage to power and electrical infrastructure has been estimated at Rs 530.61 lakh. Private properties have also faced severe destruction, with 83 homes completely destroyed and 242 partially damaged. Damage to cattle sheds has affected 260 structures.

Ongoing Response and Restoration Efforts

In response to the calamities, the government has sanctioned ex-gratia assistance totalling Rs 592 lakh for the families of those affected. As of 5 pm on August 15, 103 roads across the state were reported blocked. Mandi district faced the brunt of this disruption, with 43 roads affected, followed by Kullu with 32 and Chamba with eight.

Electricity supply has also been hampered, with 46 distribution transformer regions (DTRs) rendered inoperative; Mandi alone accounts for 39 of these outages, while Shimla has five. The water supply has experienced interruptions as well, with 221 schemes disrupted across the state, predominantly in Mandi, which has 209 affected schemes.

Emergency response teams and authorities are actively engaged in restoration tasks aimed at clearing blocked roads and reinstating power and water supplies in the worst-hit areas. The average death toll of nearly four fatalities per day since June 30 highlights the serious humanitarian impact of this monsoon season in Himachal Pradesh.
