Student leader Devendra Nath Mahto has accused the police of stopping him from attending a Tiranga Yatra in Ranchi on August 15. Mahto claimed that he and his companions were subjected to violence when they attempted to leave Sadar Hospital for a flag-hoisting ceremony. This incident reportedly occurred while Mahto was on an indefinite hunger strike, which had lasted for 14 days, protesting against alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations conducted by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC).

Mahto stated that despite being in the hospital, he had formally requested permission to attend the flag-hoisting ceremony at Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium. He noted that arrangements had been made by fellow students and that the local administration and hospital management were informed of his plans. Mahto indicated that he was assured he could leave by 9 AM, but the situation escalated unexpectedly.

According to Mahto, within a short span, police attempted to physically restrain him and his supporters. He described the actions as aggressive, stating, “The entire police force pounced on us… I pleaded with them not to lock the door or close the gate.” He alleged that those who tried to protect him were severely beaten by the police.

Protest and Health Concerns

During the interview, Mahto expressed his continuing commitment to his hunger strike, despite concerns for his health. He stated, “I am on a hunger strike for 14 days, sustained only by love and blessings.” His protest aims to address perceived deficiencies within the educational system and recruitment processes in Jharkhand.

Reflecting on Independence Day, Mahto lamented the state of affairs in the country, questioning the alignment of current practices with the ideals championed by historical figures such as Bhagat Singh and Mahatma Gandhi. He expressed dismay at the government’s actions on a day that symbolises freedom for the nation, stating, “What is my crime? I am merely trying to improve the education system.”

Mahto further voiced his concerns about being denied participation in the Tiranga Yatra, querying whether his appeal to hoist the national flag constituted a serious offence. He argued that he was following the principles of revered leaders and sought clarification on the allegations against him.

Statements from Family and Witnesses

Devendra Mahto’s brother, Dhaneshwar Mahto, raised concerns regarding the treatment of the student leader, alleging that officials prevented him from fulfilling his desire to join the Tiranga Yatra. He stated that the family had made attempts to move him to another hospital but faced obstacles posed by the police.

Witnesses, including fellow student Manish Kumar Sahu, corroborated claims of police misconduct. Sahu mentioned that students had gathered at the hospital since 8 AM to support Mahto, asserting that police had behaved aggressively towards them. He reported instances of violence, including an attendant being threatened and assaulted.

Despite being hospitalised, Mahto has remained resolute in his protest. He emphasised that the issues at stake involve the rights of students and broader educational reforms in Jharkhand. His determination was evident as he stated, “Whether I live or die is not what matters… I will remain on this bed until I receive an answer.”

Government Response and Future Steps

In light of the events, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren addressed the public during the state-level Independence Day celebration. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transparent recruitment processes and an improved educational framework, emphasising the importance of the youth in these reforms.

The Chief Minister announced initiatives like “Chhatron Ki Baat – Chhatron Ke Sath,” aimed at encouraging student suggestions for enhancing the educational system. Soren reiterated the significance of student contributions in shaping a better future for education in Jharkhand.
