Revamped IRCTC Website to Launch by July 15 Following Student Feedback

The CSR Journal Magazine

The government has announced plans to launch a new IRCTC website by July 15, as stated by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. This decision was made during an engagement with students at the Malaviya National Institute of Technology in Jaipur, where discussions focused on persistent issues related to the railway ticket booking platform.

A video from the event captured the moment a student brought attention to the captcha system, which has drawn complaints from users over the years, particularly during peak ticket booking times. In response, Vaishnaw contacted a railway official on the spot, highlighting the students’ demand for a redesigned IRCTC website.

Following this brief exchange, the Minister conveyed to the audience that the upgraded website would be ready by the specified date, prompting applause from the students in attendance.

Current User Issues with Online Bookings

The announcement is significant as millions of railway passengers have reported ongoing challenges while booking tickets online. Issues such as website crashes, slow performance, problems with OTP verification, and complications during Tatkal bookings have been frequently highlighted by users.

As digital reservations now constitute the majority of railway ticket purchases, enhancing the booking platform’s functionality is deemed essential. Online ticketing has seen substantial growth since its introduction by Indian Railways in 2002, with reports indicating that approximately 88 per cent of train tickets are currently booked via digital channels.

The situation was further compounded last year, when the government restricted Tatkal bookings to Aadhaar-authenticated users exclusively using the IRCTC website or mobile application. This move underlines the emphasis on digital verification and better compliance in ticketing processes.

Recent Developments in Railway Technology Initiatives

The new IRCTC website initiative forms part of a broader trend towards technological enhancements in government services. Earlier this month, IRCTC introduced an AI-driven food monitoring system aimed at elevating hygiene standards across railway kitchens. More than 800 kitchens throughout India have been integrated with thousands of AI-enabled cameras that ensure compliance with food preparation protocols from a central control room in New Delhi.

Additionally, the push for digital modernisation is evident in other government platforms. Recently, officials confirmed that the existing mAadhaar application will be replaced with a redesigned Aadhaar app. This updated platform is set to feature QR-based identity sharing, enhanced authentication methods, and improved controls for managing biometric access securely.

The current developments reflect the government’s commitment to improving user experience and maintaining standards in public services through the incorporation of modern technology. By addressing the challenges faced by users on platforms like IRCTC, the government aims to foster a more efficient and user-friendly environment for railway passengers.
