Two personnel from the Border Security Force (BSF) lost their lives, while another was injured, after a constable allegedly seized a service rifle from a sentry and opened fire at a BSF camp in the Malda district of West Bengal on July 23, 2026. The tragic event unfolded around 3:50 pm at the premises of the 119 Battalion headquarters located near 17 Mile in Baishnabnagar. The constable involved in the incident has been taken into custody.

Details of the Shooting

According to information from BSF sources, the individual implicated in the shooting is identified as Constable Shivam Kumar Mishra. Preliminary reports suggest that he may have been experiencing significant mental distress, although the motivations behind the shooting remain unclear and are under investigation.

Constable Mishra was reportedly in custody as part of ongoing court-martial proceedings. Officials have not disclosed the nature of the case leading to these proceedings. During the incident, he overpowered the sentry on duty, seized the service rifle, and then allegedly fired indiscriminately at nearby barracks, resulting in injuries to three BSF personnel.

The injured personnel were promptly transported to Malda Medical College and Hospital. Tragically, medical staff later confirmed the deaths of two individuals, identified as Head Constable Ajay Kumar and Constable Ambadar Suresh. The third injured jawan, Head Constable Bikas Brahma, is currently receiving treatment for his injuries.

In the aftermath of the incident, BSF personnel swiftly detained Constable Mishra to prevent further escalation. Local law enforcement authorities have initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting and are in the process of filing a case under relevant legal provisions.
