IRCTC Launches Revamped Website Enhancing User Experience

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has introduced a refreshed website aimed at improving the ticket booking process for its users. The new platform, released in beta, incorporates several enhancements designed to create a more efficient and user-friendly experience. The update follows concerns raised by students regarding issues with the previous website, which were brought to the attention of India’s Minister for Railways, Ashwani Vaishnaw. In response to these complaints, the minister instructed IRCTC to rectify the platform and launch a fully functional website by July 15, 2026.

The revamped website officially launched at 9 PM on the target date. It aims to resolve critical issues that plagued the earlier version, thereby streamlining the ticket booking experience for all users.

Challenges with the Previous Version

The previous IRCTC website faced significant challenges during peak booking times, particularly for Tatkal tickets. The platform could manage approximately 32,000 ticket bookings per minute, which was insufficient given the simultaneous attempts by lakhs of users within the same time frame. This led to frequent system freezes, payment failures, and seat availability issues, resulting in frustrating experiences for users.

Furthermore, the older interface presented additional navigation difficulties, including unexpected CAPTCHA checks during the booking process and disorganised information displays. Users were often required to check seat availability for each class individually, creating a tedious booking process that detracted from the overall user experience.

In contrast, the newly designed website tackles these issues head-on, implementing streamlined processes that cater to user needs more effectively.

Key Changes in the New IRCTC Website

The new beta website, accessible at https://www.irctc.co.ineticket, showcases several key improvements aimed at addressing user frustrations. One significant change is the removal of unnecessary interruptions, such as CAPTCHAs and pop-up ads, which previously hampered the booking flow. This cleaner interface is particularly beneficial during Tatkal booking periods, where time efficiency is critical.

Another notable enhancement is the unified display of seat availability across various classes. Instead of checking each class separately, users can now view all options on a single screen, simplifying the booking process. This crucial change saves time and reduces the risk of missing out on available seats.

The streamlined process also allows frequent travellers to save passenger details for quicker repeat bookings. Additional features planned for the full version include seat preference selection, a fare calendar for price comparisons, multilingual support, and a unified platform for concession bookings for eligible passengers.

Capacity improvements have been made to the system, with the new platform capable of managing over 1.5 lakh ticket bookings per minute. This marks a significant increase in capacity compared to the previous system, which should lead to a more stable experience during busy booking windows. The backend Passenger Reservation System is also set to be upgraded to accommodate over 40 lakh inquiries per minute, further enhancing performance.

Changes in the Booking Process

While the overall booking process remains similar, the new website introduces fewer steps and a more user-friendly navigation system. Users log in and enter their travel details, followed by a search for available trains, which display comprehensive information such as departure times and seat availability.

What distinguishes this revised process is the reduction of friction encountered during booking. Users no longer face unexpected CAPTCHAs, nor do they need to navigate multiple tabs to compare classes. The capability to save passenger information also accelerates the completion of bookings, making the entire journey from search to payment more efficient.

The beta version of the website is currently being tested, with feedback from users being solicited to refine the final product prior to its official launch in the coming weeks. Users interested in exploring the new features can access the beta directly at the previously mentioned URL.
