Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel convened a high-level meeting on July 24 at the State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC) in Gandhinagar to evaluate the ongoing rain situation in Gujarat. The Chief Minister received updates on weather conditions from representatives of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and Collectors from the affected districts, as reported by the Chief Minister’s Office.

During the meeting, IMD officials provided forecasts indicating a likelihood of widespread rainfall in the state over the forthcoming days. Chief Minister Patel requested detailed reports on the rainfall that occurred between 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm, with a specific focus on districts in South Gujarat, including Dholka, Mahemdabad, and Mehsana.

In his address, Patel instructed the administration to maintain heightened alertness throughout the night and to closely monitor developments should further rainfall occur. The SEOC is reportedly in consistent contact with districts via its hotline network to ensure effective communication and coordination.

Deployment of National Disaster Response Teams

As part of the response efforts, it was disclosed that four teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been stationed in South Gujarat—two teams in Valsad, one in Navsari, and one remaining on standby in Surat. These teams are equipped with boats and essential rescue equipment and are prepared to support the district administration during rescue and relief operations.

In addition to the NDRF, teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have also been dispatched to various districts in the Saurashtra region as a precautionary measure. On the day in question, it was reported that 352 individuals were rescued in South Gujarat, while more than 22,000 residents in Navsari and Valsad were relocated to safer areas to mitigate the impact of the inclement weather.

Furthermore, during the meeting, Chief Minister Patel reviewed the electricity situation in the regions affected by rainfall in order to ensure a stable supply in the midst of the emergency. The Chief Secretary, M. K. Das, affirmed that the state administration had adequately prepared with sufficient manpower, machinery, and equipment to effectively manage the current situation.

Post-Rainfall Recovery Operations Planned

As the meeting progressed, Chief Minister Patel emphasised the necessity of planning for recovery efforts once the rainfall subsides and floodwaters begin to recede. He directed officials to prioritise cleaning operations, road repairs, and public health initiatives as part of the subsequent recovery strategy.

This course of action underscores the administration’s commitment to restoring normalcy in affected areas and ensuring the safety and well-being of residents following the heavy rains. Local authorities are expected to implement these initiatives in a timely manner to mitigate any lingering effects of the rainfall.

By proactively managing both the immediate situation and future recovery measures, the Gujarat government aims to effectively navigate the challenges presented by the ongoing weather conditions.
