IRCTC Launches Redesigned Website to Enhance Tatkal Ticket Booking Experience

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has introduced a new version of its ticket-booking website, aiming to improve user experience and expedite the booking process. This launch, which was anticipated on July 15, promises faster page loading times, a more streamlined interface, and an increased capacity to manage the surge of users during Tatkal bookings. However, there have been reports suggesting a possible delay to the second week of August, aligning with the Independence Day celebrations.

The redesign initiative was notably prompted by feedback during a recent event in Rajasthan, where Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw was present. Attendees, primarily students, expressed their frustrations regarding the usability of the existing IRCTC portal, leading to calls for an overhaul.

User-Friendly Enhancements on the New Portal

Additionally, users will now have the option to select their preferred seat or berth while booking, instead of relying on random assignments. A fare calendar has been integrated, allowing passengers to compare ticket prices across various dates, thus enabling cost-saving measures for those with flexible travel plans. Moreover, availability for all classes, including Sleeper, AC 3 Tier, and AC 2 Tier, can now be viewed on a single screen, eliminating the need for multiple checks.

To cater to a diverse user base, the website will also offer support in multiple Indian languages, ensuring accessibility for passengers who may not be comfortable with English or Hindi. The process for concession bookings for Divyangjan passengers, students, and patients will be consolidated into a single platform, streamlining access for those in need.

Beyond visible alterations, significant enhancements have been made to the backend architecture of the IRCTC platform. The existing system frequently struggles during peak Tatkal hours when significant traffic occurs, resulting in slow loading times, failed payment transactions, and tickets becoming unavailable before confirmation.

The redesigned platform has been engineered to accommodate over 1.5 lakh ticket bookings per minute, a substantial increase from the previous capacity of approximately 32,000. This upgrade aims to improve overall performance and reliability, particularly during high-traffic times. Furthermore, the Passenger Reservation System’s backend capabilities are being expanded to handle over 40 lakh queries per minute, up from around 4 lakh, thereby ensuring that the system can manage nearly five times the current traffic.

These enhancements are intended to reduce the frequency of crashes and unsuccessful bookings during peak hours, providing users with a more efficient and reliable online ticket purchasing experience. By addressing both user interface and backend performance, IRCTC aims to transform the Tatkal booking process into a more user-friendly and accessible endeavour.
