US President Donald Trump on Thursday said that any future damage to ships, cargo or related property would be compensated using Iranian funds held under US control, as tensions between Washington and Tehran continued to escalate.

The remarks came in a post on Truth Social, where Trump described the proposal as a “fair and equitable” measure. His comments followed renewed exchanges between US and Iranian officials over the ongoing confrontation and Washington’s efforts to prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

Trump Threatens to Use Iranian Assets

In his Truth Social post, Trump said the United States would use Iranian money in its possession to cover any losses caused to maritime assets.

“Please let this statement serve to represent, until further notice, that from this point forth, any and all damages done to Ships, Cargo, or anything related thereto, will be paid for by Iranian Money that the United States has in its possession, and controls. These damages may be very substantial but, nevertheless, this is the fair and equitable thing to do,” he wrote.

According to Al Jazeera, Iran has nearly $100 billion in assets frozen by other countries and beyond its direct control.

Iran Criticises US Administration

Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi criticised officials in the Trump administration, warning that continued military pressure on Tehran would ultimately prove counterproductive.

In a post on X, Araghchi said, “Compromised individuals in the U.S. administration are burying their heads in the sand. They ignore the realities on the ground and seem focused only on 2028. The mindless aggression they advocate will only ensure that POTUS pays heavier price for deal he’s trying to achieve.”

Trump Reiterates Nuclear Warning

Earlier on Thursday, Trump again insisted that Iran must never be allowed to possess nuclear weapons, saying the United States was making significant progress in its efforts against the Islamic Republic.

“We’re doing very well against the Islamic Republic of Iran—we’re doing extremely well. They would like to do something, but I say they’re not ready yet. They need more of the same. They’ve got some evil intentions. We cannot let them have a nuclear weapon,” Trump said.

He added that Iran should not even be able to contemplate acquiring nuclear weapons.

“We cannot let them even think about having nuclear weapons and that is exactly what is happening. They will never have a nuclear weapon. This should’ve been done by other American Presidents or other countries. It didn’t have to be us but if we don’t do it nobody else will. I will, and nobody else has the capability to do it,” Trump said.

Tensions Remain High

Trump’s latest remarks come amid continuing hostilities between the United States and Iran, with both sides maintaining hardline positions as diplomatic efforts to resolve the dispute remain uncertain.
