King Charles III officially declared the 23rd Commonwealth Games open during a colourful opening ceremony at The Hydro in Glasgow, marking the start of the multi-sport event that will see more than 3,000 athletes from 74 nations and territories compete over the next 11 days.

India has begun its campaign with a 124-member contingent competing across eight able-bodied sports and five para sports. On Friday, the country’s biggest medal hopes rest on para powerlifting, while Indian athletes will also compete in gymnastics, swimming, lawn bowls and boxing.

King Charles Opens Glasgow 2026

King Charles III attended the opening ceremony alongside Queen Camilla as Scotland hosted the Commonwealth Games for the fourth time.

According to the official Commonwealth Games Glasgow 2026 website, the ceremony began with a curved LED display showcasing iconic Scottish landmarks and symbols, including Loch Ness, the Kelpies and Edinburgh Castle.

The Royal Family described the ceremony as an “incredible evening” in a post on X as the Games officially got underway.

India Reaffirms Sporting Ambitions

Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya shared visuals of the Indian contingent during the opening ceremony and also met Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey on the sidelines of the Commonwealth Sports Ministers’ Meeting in Glasgow.

According to the minister, discussions focused on India’s sports reforms, including the Khelo Bharat Niti and ASMITA Leagues, which aim to strengthen grassroots sports, promote gender inclusion and create pathways for sporting excellence.

The two sides also discussed expanding sports partnerships and exploring opportunities for greater trade and investment cooperation as India prepares to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games.

Team India’s official social media handle also shared photographs of the athletes during the opening ceremony.

India Targets Early Medals

Friday’s strongest medal prospects come in para powerlifting, where Ashok Kumar Malik, Parmjeet Kumar, Jaspreet Kaur, Suman Devi, Kasthuri Rajamani, Jhandu Kumar and Sudhir will compete across multiple weight categories.

In lawn bowls, Rupa Rani Tirkey and Pinki will face South Africa’s Thabelo Muvhango and Jacqui van Rensburg in the women’s pairs sectional round after beginning their campaign with a victory.

Putul Sonowal, who produced one of the biggest upsets on the opening day by defeating 2023 world champion Ryan Bester of Canada, will take on Falkland Islands’ Cecil Alexander in the men’s singles sectional round.

India’s gymnastics campaign will begin with Tapeshwarnath Das, Swathish KP, Tapan Mohanty and Yogeshwar Singh competing in the men’s team and individual events before the men’s team final later in the evening.

In swimming, para swimmer RVVBK Budigina will compete in the men’s 100m freestyle S13 heats, while Olympian Srihari Nataraj will begin his campaign in the men’s 50m backstroke heats.

Boxing action for India will commence with Jadumani Singh facing Scotland’s Aaron Cullen in the men’s 55kg Round of 32.

India Looks to Continue Strong Commonwealth Record

This is India’s 19th appearance at the Commonwealth Games.

Since the 2002 edition, India has finished among the top five nations in the medal standings at every Commonwealth Games and has won at least 50 medals in each of the last six editions, underlining its consistency at the multi-sport event.

The Commonwealth Games 2026 are being held in Glasgow from July 23 to August 2.
