YouTuber and podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia received protection from arrest through the Supreme Court’s decision on Tuesday regarding multiple FIRs filed against him for offensive remarks made on India’s Got Latent. Allahbadia received multiple FIR charges in Mumbai, Guwahati, and Jaipur after making offensive jokes during an episode of the comedy show.
Despite granting the YouTuber protection, the court did not hold back in criticising his behavior. Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh, during the hearing, harshly reprimanded Allahbadia, calling his remarks “perverted” and a source of shame for society. The court remarked, “The words you have chosen, parents will be ashamed, sisters will be ashamed. The entire society will feel ashamed. The perverted mind. The perversion you and your henchmen have exhibited!”
SC Grills Allahbadia Over His Remarks
The court’s disapproval was clear as it accused Allahbadia of “vomiting dirt in his mind” and taking society for granted due to his popularity. Justice Kant further expressed his disbelief, questioning why such behaviour should be entertained, saying, “Just because you are popular, you cannot take society for granted. Is there anyone on earth who would like this language? There is something very dirty in his mind which has been vomited.”
No More Fresh FIRs Against Allahbadia
The court provided protection by stating no further police FIRs of similar accusations would be registered against Allahbadia while allowing the present ones to continue. The court accepted Allahbadia’s statements about threats and issued orders to both Maharashtra and Assam police to safeguard him and his family against potential threats. The court directed him to stay in the country and to assist authorities throughout their ongoing probe.
The case has raised concerns about the limits of free speech and the impact of social media influencers in today’s society. Allahbadia’s legal battle continues, as the court scrutinises the offensive content and its repercussions on public morals.
