MCA and MSc Surpass MBA in Online Education Growth Amid AI Advancements

The CSR Journal Magazine

The landscape of online education is evolving rapidly, with MCA and MSc programmes gaining significant traction among students and working professionals. A recent report from College Vidya indicates that these degree options are outpacing MBA enrolments, which have traditionally been a primary choice for many aiming to advance their careers. This shift highlights a growing preference for specialised and technology-oriented postgraduate education.

While MBA enrolments saw a year-on-year increase of 10.1 per cent, MCA and MSc programmes experienced remarkable growth rates of 61.7 per cent and 60.3 per cent, respectively. Such numbers signal an important transformation in the types of skills and knowledge that professionals are seeking in an increasingly competitive job market.

The continued relevance of the MBA is noted; however, its dominance is waning in the face of rising interest in more technologically focused disciplines. The data reflects a shift in learner priorities toward gaining expertise that aligns with industry demands, driven by advancements in artificial intelligence.

MBA’s Share Declines While Alternatives Flourish

The report highlights that, while the MBA remains the leading postgraduate programme by enrolment share, its percentage fell from 73.7 per cent to 69.6 per cent over the past year. In contrast, the combined enrolment for MCA and MSc has increased their share from approximately one in seven postgraduate students to one in five. This change indicates a diversification of interests among learners.

The contrasting growth rates make it clear: while MBA enrolments grew modestly, MCA saw more than six times that growth rate, and MSc followed closely. This dynamic suggests that the postgraduate education market is expanding across different fields rather than shifting exclusively from MBA to other options.

Furthermore, the report suggests an overall increase in interest in postgraduate education, with these programmes comprising 58 per cent of total enrolments on the College Vidya platform. Their growth of 16.6 per cent year-on-year stands in stark contrast to the 8.6 per cent growth observed in undergraduate programmes.

Demographic Shifts in Online Learners

Another notable finding is the demographic profile of those enrolling in these programmes. The share of learners aged 25-29 has increased significantly, from 20.4 per cent in 2024 to 30.5 per cent in 2025. Meanwhile, the proportion of younger learners aged 20-24 has declined from 52.5 per cent to 40.6 per cent. This trend indicates a shift towards attracting more experienced professionals who seek to enhance their skills rather than recent graduates.

The evolving motivations for pursuing online postgraduate qualifications can serve a different purpose for working professionals. These programmes allow individuals to upskill while remaining in their current employment, aligning with a growing demand for specialised knowledge in areas directly relevant to industry needs.

Ultimately, as professionals increasingly prioritise skills that align with future job markets, the conversation surrounding educational qualifications is shifting from merely selecting general management degrees to identifying specific skills that will remain important throughout their careers.
