PayPal has reportedly executed significant layoffs in India, dismissing approximately 600 employees. This figure represents around 10 per cent of the company’s workforce in the country. The layoffs are part of a broader restructuring initiative undertaken by PayPal that also involves job cuts in other regions.

The affected employees are predominantly located in major cities, including Chennai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad. Layoffs reportedly took place across various departments such as technology, engineering, operations, payments, and finance. Prior to these reductions, PayPal was said to employ over 6,000 staff members in India.

According to a report from BusinessLine, the restructuring may affect as many as 1,500 employees, translating to about 25 per cent of PayPal’s Indian workforce. This reflects the company’s ongoing strategy to streamline operations on a global scale.

Employees Informed of Layoffs via Call

In a troubling development, employees have alleged that they were informed of their termination during a conference call without prior notice. One impacted individual described receiving an invite for a call on the morning of August 31, which included numerous employees from various offices across India. During the call, it was reportedly announced that they would be let go, and they were subsequently denied access to company systems.

The same employee also mentioned receiving an off-boarding email shortly after the call, outlining the process following their dismissal. Although PayPal has promised one month’s salary as severance and some job assistance, many employees are still awaiting further details regarding their final settlements.

Another employee revealed that they received a direct email informing them of their dismissal on August 31. Such circumstances have raised concerns regarding the manner in which the layoffs were conducted.

Global Restructuring Efforts Underway at PayPal

The layoffs in India coincide with PayPal’s extensive global restructuring plans. Earlier this year, the company announced intentions to implement a multi-year plan that is expected to result in a 20 per cent reduction of its worldwide workforce. As of December 31, 2025, the company had approximately 23,800 employees, suggesting that up to 4,760 positions might be impacted globally.

Reports indicate that these layoffs are being executed in phases, starting with the Asia-Pacific region, including India. Following this, meetings are scheduled for affected employees located in the US, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

PayPal is not alone in this trend of layoffs. Recently, Uber announced plans to cut 3,300 jobs globally, with the intention of reallocating savings to new technologies, including self-driving vehicles. Additionally, Oracle may soon lay off around 10,000 employees, despite having already reduced its workforce by 32,000 earlier this year. Notably, more than 1,28,000 positions in the tech sector have been eliminated worldwide in 2026, surpassing the prior year’s total of 1,22,000 job cuts.
