Rajnath Singh, the Union Defence Minister, has expressed his concerns regarding the ongoing protests in New Delhi. He accused the Opposition of manipulating the nation’s youth, alleging that they are being used as “political tools” to facilitate personal agendas. Addressing the demonstrations led by the ‘Cockroach Janta Party,’ Singh stated that the situation has become a significant concern and highlighted the unfortunate tendency of certain individuals to incite unrest among students for political gain.

Singh asserted that the government, under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, is dedicated to addressing the aspirations and welfare of young people in India. He emphasised the importance of listening to students’ grievances and being responsive to their needs. In his remarks, he expressed confidence that the intelligent and discerning youth of India would recognise misleading tactics and choose a path focused on progress and nation-building.

Furthermore, Singh described the unrest as a construct devised by the opposition alliance known as the INDIA bloc. He maintained that the government remains committed to justice for all citizens, especially students. He characterised the feelings of anger allegedly fostered by certain opposition figures as unsuccessful attempts to mislead the public, particularly the youth. Singh reiterated the government’s attentiveness to youth concerns and drew attention to the ongoing parliamentary session, noting that it has welcomed meaningful debates on pertinent issues.

Call for Legislative Debate Over Street Protests

Singh further challenged the Opposition’s choice to engage in protests rather than pursuing discussions within the legislative framework. He articulated that the Parliament is the appropriate venue for democratic dialogue, where opposition members have the liberty to express their viewpoints. By focusing on street protests, he argued that the opposition is not effectively addressing the issues at hand.

He concluded his address by urging the Opposition to permit the smooth operation of the Monsoon session, encouraging them to raise their concerns within Parliament instead of disrupting proceedings. Singh posited that constructive discourse would ultimately be more beneficial for all parties involved, rather than public demonstrations that might distract from legislative responsibilities.

In the backdrop of these developments, the Rajya Sabha was adjourned until 3 pm on the same day, while the Lok Sabha scheduled its next session for 11:00 am on July 23. The protests within Parliament premises saw opposition MPs donning black attire, symbolising their dissent against the government. Key figures such as Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, along with Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and Priyanka Gandhi, were present at the demonstrations that sought to highlight their grievances.
