Restrictions on cow slaughter in Assam

The incident has fueled the ongoing debate in Assam over animal sacrifice. The Chief Minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma before Eid had requested the Muslim community members to avoid cow slaughter so that the festival is celebrated peacefully and there is no disturbance and religious sentiments are respected. This appeal by the Chief Minister was welcomed by many Eidgah committees and local groups in Assam, but at the same time a few groups opposed.

Sarma confirmed to the media that about 800 Eidgah committees in Assam have welcomed the restrictions on cow slaughter and even called this an important move so that both the communities can peacefully coexist in harmony. “This year, many people belonging to the Islamic faith have decided not to perform cow sacrifice during Eid. We welcome this decision,”.

Qurbani Appeal by Himanta Biswa Sarma

During the media interaction, Sarma urged people to avoid sacrifice of animals in areas where Hindus reside in majority. And he even warned those not following rules would face consequences, strict legal action will be taken against them. “I would also humbly request those Hajis and others who are planning to perform qurbani that they should not carry it out in areas where Hindu residents are living in large numbers. Otherwise, law enforcement agencies will take strict action,” Sarma appealed. Sarma also took to X and shared that over 800 Eidgah committees had publicly supported restrictions on cow slaughter ahead of Eid-ul-Zuha.
