Rajasthan’s Ancient Summer Superfood Returns as Temperatures Cross 45°C

The CSR Journal Magazine

Temperature in Rajasthan is increasing with each passing day, in some places temperature has already crossed 45 degrees Celsius. Owing to the increasing heat, people in Rajasthan are returning to centuries-old traditional food. Instead of air conditioners, cold drinks, people are choosing ‘Rabdi’, a homemade dish. In places like Jaisalmer, Barmer, Bikaner temperature has already crossed 45°C. ‘Rajasthani Rabdi’ is prepared using millet or sorghum flour along with buttermilk. For years Rabdi has been the staple food for people residing in the desert. This gives both a cooling effect, and adds nutritional value to the body.

Weather condition in Rajasthan

The current situation in Rajasthan is such that many places are witnessing heatwave conditions. Places like Barmer have broken their own record, it is already 46.8 degrees Celsius and places like Jaisalmer and Churu are facing desert winds, making living conditions unbearable.

In Kotri village, near Roopangarh, Rabdi is not just simple food, but considered as a treatment. It helps keep the body hydrated, cool and gives energy, even in peak summer. The interesting combination of millet, sorghum, and buttermilk helps enhance digestion and helps the body cope up with the soaring temperature. A resident of Kotri Sua Dai Maa shares, “Rabri is a superfood, it is rich in nutrition and helps keep us cool in peak summer. I am 80, and for over 40 years now, I have been consuming Rabri in summers.” She adds that her children and grandchildren work in the field and they take Rabri for lunch.

Health benefits of Rabdi

More than the health benefits, Rabdi has cultural significance in Rajasthan. In many parts of Rajasthan Jyeshtha Sudi Chaturthi is observed as “Rabri Day”. On this day families prepare and serve Rabri with close ones.

In this modern age, when youngsters are drinking cold drinks, there are many in Rajasthan who are preferring the traditional Rabdi over other food in summer.
