Railways Employee Reveals Cost Burden from Stolen Train Linens

The CSR Journal Magazine

The cost of stolen train linens has been highlighted by an employee of Indian Railways, who took to a viral video to explain the financial impact of such losses. The employee, Amit Yadav, is in charge of distributing and collecting linen in air-conditioned coaches. He describes his daily routine, which involves providing bedsheets, towels, and blankets to passengers, only to face monetary penalties when items go missing.

Yadav has detailed that each unreturned item results in deductions from his salary. Specifically, he is liable to pay Rs 60 for every towel, Rs 250 for each bedsheet, and Rs 700 for every blanket that remains unaccounted for during his duty hours. This financial strain has led him to adopt a more cautious approach in his distribution methods.

In an alarming instance, Yadav revealed that he once had to cover Rs 5,000 in penalties after a significant amount of linen was not returned, a substantial figure considering his monthly salary is Rs 14,000. This experience has compelled him to rethink how he distributes linen, opting to provide towels only upon request instead of placing them on every berth.

Adaptations in Linen Distribution

Despite attempting to mitigate losses by changing his approach to distribution, Yadav has still encountered issues with missing items. In a recent incident, a passenger questioned the absence of towels, which led to Yadav explaining the need for this adjustment due to ongoing theft problems. Unfortunately, this explanation did not deter the same passenger from allegedly taking a towel when departing from a train bound for Delhi.

The adjustments made by Yadav have not completely solved the problem, illustrating the ongoing challenges faced by railway staff in maintaining inventory. Even as employees adapt procedures, the underlying issue of theft appears persistent, leaving the burden of losses squarely on the workers who lack the means to absorb such costs.

Yadav’s experiences reflect a broader issue within public transportation systems, where frontline workers often face financial repercussions due to the actions of a few individuals. This situation begs the question of responsibility and accountability for passengers who disregard railway property.

Public Response and Awareness Initiatives

The video featuring Amit Yadav has garnered significant attention on social media, leading to a wider discourse about the treatment of railway employees. YouTuber Naveen Singh, who shared the video, used it as a platform to encourage viewers to consider the impact of their actions on the lives of frontline workers.

Singh’s caption urged viewers to reflect on the hardships that these employees endure, stating, “Thoda in logo ka bhi soche,” which translates to “Think about them too.” He concluded with a direct appeal to viewers to refrain from stealing railway linens, placing the onus of responsibility back on the passengers.

The public’s reaction has been one of empathy, with many expressing their support for Yadav and advocating for increased accountability measures against theft within the railway system. This incident serves as a reminder of the impact individual actions can have on the livelihoods of dedicated workers striving to provide services amidst challenging circumstances.
