Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Congress MP, has asserted that students were reportedly subjected to violence for merely asking pertinent questions about their futures. On July 21, 2026, he called for a thorough discussion in Parliament during the ongoing Monsoon Session, highlighting the alleged brutality faced by students alongside the crisis surrounding the NEET examination paper leak.

In a post shared on X, Gandhi stated that he, along with other Opposition MPs, met with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to present their concerns. He expressed that the call for a comprehensive discussion on the issues is of utmost importance. The Opposition insists that the voice of the students must be amplified within the political sphere.

According to Gandhi, the violent response from authorities only serves to question the effectiveness of Parliament regarding youth-related matters. “If Parliament cannot discuss the future of India’s youth, what is it for?” he questioned, underlining the significance of addressing student grievances.

Opposition’s Unified Front on the Issues

Beyond Gandhi’s statements, Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal has also emphasized the Opposition’s collective demand for accountability from the government, particularly from Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Venugopal articulated the need for dedicated time in Parliament to address the Crisis of the NEET and CBSE exams, alongside the violent actions of Delhi Police against peaceful student protests.

In his remarks on X, Venugopal called for a response from the Education Minister about the shortcomings that have led to these crises. He reiterated the determination of the Opposition to ensure these issues are not overlooked during the Monsoon Session, indicating ongoing efforts to maintain pressure on the government for explanations.

The members of the INDIA bloc, which includes various key Opposition parties, convened at Parliament House to devise strategies for addressing these critical matters. They envision a united front to tackle the pressing issues affecting students, reinforcing their commitment to keeping these topics in public discourse.

Concerns Over Student Protests and Government Response

In reaction to the violent crackdowns on student protestors, Mallikarjun Kharge, the Congress President and Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, expressed his disapproval of the government’s actions. Choosing to forgo any birthday celebrations, he labelled the police response as unacceptable and highlighted the inappropriate treatment of students by the government.

Kharge took to X to convey his outrage regarding the police measures employed against demonstrators, stating that the administrative reaction to the peaceful protest did not align with democratic values. He highlighted that the suppression of student voices signifies a troubling trend in governance.

The opposition’s statements follow a heightened atmosphere of protest initiated by the CJP, which escalated on July 20, 2026, against the alleged NEET-UG 2026 paper leak. As demonstrations intensified, members of the party sought to meet with Union Health Minister JP Nadda to further advocate for their demands.

The Monsoon Session of Parliament, which began on July 17, 2026, is set to continue until August 13, 2026. The ongoing discussions are expected to address various critical and contentious issues, including the ones raised by the Opposition regarding the apparent failure to safeguard student interests and the integrity of examinations.
