Putin Revives Sukhoi Su-57 Fighter Jet Offer to India

The CSR Journal Magazine

President Vladimir Putin has reiterated Russia’s proposal to collaborate with India in the joint development and manufacture of the fifth-generation Sukhoi Su-57 stealth fighter jet. This offer, made during an interview on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, highlights Russia’s intent to strengthen defence cooperation with India, moving beyond traditional transactional relationships.

In a media interaction, Putin emphasised the long-standing military partnership between the two nations. He noted that both countries share a historical bond of military-technical cooperation that dates back to the Soviet era, with a significant portion of India’s armed forces operating equipment originally sourced from Russia.

Putin stressed that the evolving Defence ties have shifted from simple procurement to a focus on joint research and development. He used the BrahMos missile project as a successful example of this cooperation, noting the collaboration between Indian and Russian experts from its inception till completion.

Details of the Su-57 Offer

Putin described the Sukhoi Su-57 as one of the most advanced aircraft globally, highlighting its capabilities, including the potential configuration as a dual-pilot command centre. He mentioned that Moscow had previously proposed a joint programme for developing the aircraft but noted that it had been executed independently instead, affirming Russia’s readiness to supply the Su-57 to India now.

While commenting on the geopolitical context, he acknowledged India’s need to navigate international relationships, particularly concerning possible sanctions from other nations. He asserted that India acts in alignment with its sovereignty and national interests, a principle he believes is particularly strengthened under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.

Putin referenced the past challenges faced by Modi concerning entry bans to the United States, commenting that such experiences shaped India’s current stance on defence partnerships. By emphasising India’s autonomy in choosing its defence collaborations, he reinforced the message that India is entitled to procure the equipment that meets its national security needs.

Significance in the Current Context

This renewed proposal comes at a critical juncture when India is actively exploring options to enhance the fifth-generation capabilities of its Air Force. Currently, the Indian Air Force does not operate any fifth-generation combat aircraft, and there are rising concerns regarding Pakistan’s potential acquisition of China’s J-35AE stealth fighter.

India’s indigenous programme for a fifth-generation fighter, known as the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), is still under development, with a projected entry into service around the mid-2030s. Therefore, the prospect of acquiring advanced fighters such as the Su-57 becomes increasingly relevant for India.

Putin had expressed earlier in the week that Russia is prepared to not only supply the Su-57 to India but also to engage in the joint development and production of the aircraft while sharing crucial technologies. Moscow perceives no limits to expanding defence cooperation with New Delhi.

The Su-57, Russia’s flagship stealth fighter, is designed for multi-role combat missions encompassing air, ground, and maritime targets. It integrates advanced stealth features, high manoeuvrability, and sophisticated avionics, placing it among a select group of operational fifth-generation fighters, which also include the American F-35 and China’s J-35.
