The CSR Journal Magazine

The Punjab government has proposed an action plan amounting to Rs 42.95 crore as part of the National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction (NAPDDR) for the fiscal year 2026-27. This initiative aims to enhance drug prevention and rehabilitation efforts throughout the state. Baljit Kaur, the Cabinet Minister responsible for Social Security, Women and Child Development, announced the plan during a meeting held on Monday in Chandigarh.

The action plan encompasses multiple components, including drug prevention initiatives, awareness campaigns, counselling services, life skills education, and rehabilitation programmes. This comprehensive approach highlights the state’s commitment to addressing the drug abuse issue from multiple angles.

During the meeting, Kaur discussed the collaboration required among various departments to finalise the state action plans under the NAPDDR and the National Action Plan for Senior Citizens. Key departments such as Home Affairs, Health and Family Welfare, AYUSH, and Education were represented, ensuring a multi-sectoral approach in tackling this pervasive challenge.

Focus on Prevention and Awareness

Kaur emphasised the importance of prevention and awareness campaigns, particularly targeting schools and colleges. The government plans to strengthen these initiatives to ensure that young individuals are educated about the dangers of substance abuse. Kaur stated that the objective is to prevent youth from succumbing to drug addiction.

Additionally, the Punjab government intends to invest in sports and cultural activities, promoting youth engagement as a means to divert their focus towards productive pursuits. This strategic inclusion aims to foster an environment that minimises the risk of drug abuse among younger generations.

Specialised training programmes will be initiated for teachers, healthcare professionals, and police personnel. These capacity-building endeavours are designed to equip frontline workers with the skills necessary to effectively identify and address drug-related issues within their communities.

Rehabilitation and Support for Affected Individuals

On the topic of rehabilitation, Kaur outlined plans to enhance counselling and treatment options for individuals affected by drug addiction. The government will expand existing services to facilitate dignified reintegration into society, and focus on skill development and employment-oriented training opportunities.

The minister highlighted the need for special attention to vulnerable populations, including women and children, ensuring that they receive the necessary support. This targeted approach aims to provide effective pathways for recovery and social reintegration.

Kaur also reviewed the proposed action plan under the National Action Plan for Senior Citizens during the meeting. The government is dedicated to promoting a dignified and secure lifestyle for senior citizens throughout Punjab, showcasing its commitment to welfare across different age groups in the state.
