Protests Erupt Outside Pakistan’s UK Consulate Over Deadly Clashes in PoK, Calls for Accountability Grow

The CSR Journal Magazine

Protests by members of the Kashmiri diaspora took place at Pakistan’s consulate in the United Kingdom this week, in response to deadly confrontations involving Pakistani security forces. The violence reportedly occurred during a funeral in Rawalakot, located in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (POK), where at least 11 people were killed, and around 70 sustained injuries when authorities allegedly opened fire on mourners.

Reports suggest that civilians were participating in a gathering to pay their respects to a civil rights activist when the shooting incident took place. The harsh actions by the security forces have raised alarm among local and international observers, prompting calls for accountability and human rights protections in the region.

The situation has reportedly escalated, with tensions increasing since June 5, as protests have spread throughout POK. Organisers of the demonstrations allege that excessive force has been used against civilians engaged in peaceful protests, particularly in Rawalakot.

UK Politicians Call for Intervention

In light of the recent events, nearly 30 British Members of Parliament (MPs), including Imran Hussain, the MP for Bradford East with ties to POK, have expressed their concern regarding the situation in the region. The MPs have written to the UK government, urging it to take diplomatic measures to address what they described as severe and brutal human rights violations in POK.

The MPs’ letter highlights the increasing reports of arrests, communication blackouts, and rising tensions in the territory governed by Pakistan. This international intervention is seen as critical to ensure that the rights of the Kashmiri people are upheld and protected against alleged state-sponsored violence.

The Pakistani administration’s clampdown on dissent in POK has been noted as a significant factor contributing to the ongoing unrest. The Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), which is advocating for a range of socio-economic reforms, plans to lead a protest rally to demand the implementation of a 38-point agenda. This agenda includes calls for subsidised flour and electricity for the local population.

Community Response and Further Actions

The protests in Bradford have featured speakers denouncing the actions of the Pakistani security forces, as attendees held placards and chanted slogans in support of Kashmiri rights. Demonstrators have emphasised the importance of international solidarity in their struggle for justice and an end to alleged abuses.

Local community leaders have also called for urgent action from the UK government, stressing the necessity for a thorough investigation into the recent violence and accountability for those responsible. They believe that sustained pressure from the international community could facilitate a more equitable resolution to the ongoing crisis in POK.

The scheduled protest by the JAAC on June 9 is anticipated to draw substantial participation from the local population, further solidifying the community’s commitment to advocating for their rights. Activists remain hopeful that these actions will lead to greater awareness of the issues faced by the Kashmiri people and prompt effective measures to address their demands.
