Protests Erupt Nationwide Following NEET-UG 2026 Exam Cancellation

The CSR Journal Magazine

The NEET-UG 2026 exam, crucial for aspiring medical students, is engulfed in a crisis after allegations of a coordinated paper leak emerged. Consequently, the examination, conducted on May 3, was cancelled by the Centre on May 9. This cancellation has raised significant concerns regarding the integrity of the nation’s largest undergraduate medical entrance test, impacting the futures of over 22 lakh students.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) reported that the NEET-UG was administered across more than 5,400 centres nationwide and in 14 international locations. However, complaints regarding the examination’s conduct prompted swift action from authorities, leading to the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) under several legal provisions. The FIR alleges offences related to criminal conspiracy, cheating, and other forms of misconduct.

CBI teams have since been dispatched to locations such as Jaipur and Nashik to further investigate the alleged irregularities. In Nashik, a four-member team has taken custody of a suspect linked to the case, while efforts to collect evidence are ongoing in Jaipur as well. This investigation aims to unravel the complexities surrounding the alleged paper leak.

Nationwide Student Protests and Political Backlash

The cancellation of NEET-UG 2026 has ignited protests by student organisations across India. Demonstrations have been reported in major coaching hub cities, including Kota and Chennai. The Students’ Federation of India (SFI) has voiced significant concerns about systemic malpractice in NEET, arguing that issues of this nature have persisted since the establishment of the NTA.

Political leaders have joined the fray, criticising the government over the alleged breakdown of the examination system. Rahul Gandhi, leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, condemned the cancellation, labelling it a profound failure affecting the aspirations of countless students. He further highlighted the sacrifices made by families in pursuit of medical education, framing the situation as a betrayal by the ruling government.

Other political figures, including Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi, have similarly condemned the government’s oversight and called for accountability. Kharge stressed the need for attention to recurring issues in examinations and connected the current debacle to wider systemic failures affecting students across various states.

Calls for System Reform and Accountability

The NEET exam crisis has not only prompted protests but also raised discussions about the need for reform within the testing system. Educational leaders and coaching institute officials have emphasised the necessity for robust measures against those involved in paper leaks. They insist on a secure and fair environment for future examinations, urging the NTA to implement reforms to restore public trust.

Nitin Kukreja, CEO of ALLEN Career Institute, encouraged students to remain optimistic and to prepare diligently for the rescheduled examination. He recommended a transition to a computer-based testing model, which could potentially mitigate future concerns about paper leaks. The importance of transparent procedures in the upcoming re-examination has been underscored by educators aiming to safeguard student interests.

Background discussions have also called for stringent penalties against those found culpable in the incident. Prominent educators and organisations have initiated dialogues about maintaining the integrity of the examination process, highlighting the need for comprehensive investigations and accountability measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
