Prolonged Screen Time Linked to Rising Balance Disorders Among Young Adults

The CSR Journal Magazine

The increasing prevalence of balance disorders among young adults has garnered significant attention. This trend correlates with heightened screen exposure, particularly through social media and digital content. Many individuals, especially those in urban settings, are experiencing symptoms traditionally associated with older demographics. Reports indicate symptoms like dizziness, visual disorientation, and sensations of floating among younger individuals who spend extensive periods on their devices. This phenomenon raises concerns about public health implications.

Dr. Anirban Biswas, the Principal Director at the Institute of Neurotology at Pacific OneHealth Hospital, noted that approximately one in six individuals may face some form of balance disorder. Extrapolating this figure to the Delhi NCR region suggests that over 1.25 crore people might be affected. In broader terms, it is estimated that around 22 crores of the Indian population could suffer from balance disorders, highlighting the severity of this emerging health issue.

Contributing Factors to Dizziness in Young Adults

Several factors contribute to the prevalence of dizziness and balance disorders among young professionals, such as prolonged screen time while lying in bed. The digital landscape has changed dramatically, with many young people engaged in binge-watching and social media scrolling, often late into the night. Dr. Biswas elaborated that the sensory coordination required for balance relies on the interaction between the inner ear, eyes, brain, and other bodily systems. Excessive screen exposure disrupts this coordination, leading to symptoms including visual dizziness and a sense of imbalance.

The detrimental effects of late-night digital consumption extend beyond immediate symptoms, as quality of sleep and the body’s circadian rhythm are also affected. Dr. Biswas pointed out that the onset of these issues can worsen over time and contribute to neurocognitive fatigue, highlighting the interconnected nature of digital behaviour and physical health.

Despite widespread assumptions, many individuals disregard their dizziness as a trivial issue, attributing it to factors such as dehydration or fatigue. However, dizziness itself is a symptom of a deeper medical condition, whether it stems from the inner ear, neurological issues, or other physical systems. Consequently, misdiagnosis is prevalent; individuals may visit numerous specialists without arriving at an accurate understanding of their condition.

Impact of Untreated Balance Disorders on Mental Health

The implications of untreated balance disorders extend beyond mere physical symptoms. Individuals experiencing persistent dizziness often develop anxieties about falling, leading to social withdrawal and avoidance of crowded places. This situation is particularly concerning for young adults, as these feelings can significantly impair work productivity and overall emotional well-being.

Dr. Biswas highlighted that persistent dizziness can erode confidence in one’s ability to navigate spaces independently, exacerbating feelings of isolation. Conditions like Persistent Postural-Perceptual Dizziness (PPPD) illustrate the complex interplay between dizziness and mental health, further emphasising the need for thorough medical evaluation and treatment.

To address the rising instances of balance disorders, healthcare professionals recommend proactive measures. Dr. Biswas suggested lifestyle changes, such as minimising prolonged screen time, avoiding late-night scrolling, ensuring proper neck posture, and engaging in physical activity. Furthermore, they emphasise the importance of recognising persistent dizziness as a serious concern rather than a mere consequence of stress.
