Powerful Earthquakes Rock Venezuela, USGS Warns Death Toll Could Reach 100,000

The CSR Journal Magazine

Venezuela was struck by two powerful earthquakes on Wednesday evening, triggering the collapse of buildings and widespread panic as authorities began assessing the extent of the damage. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) warned that the disaster could result in significant casualties, with an estimated death toll ranging between 10,000 and 100,000.

The twin earthquakes struck western Venezuela within minutes of each other but were felt strongly in the capital, Caracas. Officials have yet to confirm the number of casualties, while emergency authorities continue to monitor the unfolding situation amid reports of structural damage across affected areas.

Twin Earthquakes Strike Within Minutes

According to the USGS, the first earthquake, measuring magnitude 7.2, struck near San Felipe, around 284 kilometres west of Caracas, at 22:04 GMT.

It was followed almost immediately by a stronger magnitude 7.5 earthquake centred near Yumare, approximately 293 kilometres west of the Venezuelan capital.

Issuing a preliminary assessment, the USGS said, “High casualties and extensive damage are probable and the disaster is likely widespread.” The agency’s estimates suggest the eventual death toll could range from 10,000 to 100,000.

Authorities Issue Initial Response

Acting President Delcy Rodriguez said she would soon address the nation following the earthquakes. In a post on X, she stated, “Attention: shortly I will address Venezuelans to report on the situation following the strong earthquake that has affected our country.”

Meanwhile, India’s National Center for Seismology (NCS) recorded the earthquake at a shallow depth of 15 kilometres. The agency reported, “EQ of M: 6.8, On: 25/06/2026 03:34:32 IST, Lat: 10.451 N, Long: 68.352 W, Depth: 15 Km, Location: Venezuela.”

The United States Embassy in Caracas said it was closely monitoring developments following the earthquake. Advising American citizens in Venezuela, it urged them to avoid damaged areas, stay out of unsafe buildings, follow local media updates and seek secure shelter. The embassy also asked US nationals to monitor the State Department’s STEP programme for further information.

Messages of Support Pour In

Political leaders from across the region expressed solidarity with Venezuela as reports of damage emerged. US Congresswoman Maria Elvira Salazar said, “Today my prayer is with the Venezuelan people. May God embrace the families affected by the earthquake, give strength to those facing pain, and protect every rescuer who today fights to save lives. Venezuela has demonstrated time and again the strength of its people. With faith and with God’s help, it will also overcome this harsh trial.”

El Salvador President Nayib Bukele also conveyed his support, saying, “Our hearts are with the people of Venezuela during these difficult times. We send them all our solidarity and our prayers. Strength Venezuela.”

Venezuelan opposition leader Edmundo Gonzalez said the consecutive earthquakes had caused extensive destruction across the country. In a post on X, he wrote, “Two consecutive earthquakes have caused significant damage in Venezuela. Collapsed structures. Panic in the streets. Two hours later, we still don’t know if there are victims or fatalities.”

Nobel laureate Maria Corina Machado also shared a message of support, stating, “My heart, my infinite embrace, and my prayers are with every Venezuelan home in these hours of anguish. May strength, serenity, and solidarity prevail among us in the face of this difficult moment. May God protect every Venezuelan, our families, and our homes. Today, more united than ever.”

Authorities have not yet released an official casualty count as rescue and assessment operations continue in the affected regions.
