The CSR Journal Magazine

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to embark on a two-day journey to West Bengal and Odisha on June 20 and 21. His itinerary is packed with public engagements, development initiatives, cultural programmes, and significant national events. A key feature of this visit includes participation in the 12th International Yoga Day celebrations in Kolkata, along with the commissioning of three indigenously constructed naval vessels and the launch of various infrastructure initiatives.

On June 20, PM Modi will kick off his activities in West Bengal by attending the Paschimbanga Divas celebrations in Tarakeswar, located in Hooghly district. He is expected to inaugurate and lay foundation stones for numerous projects focusing on railways, agriculture, rural development, fisheries, and animal husbandry.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, these initiatives aim to enhance infrastructure, support livelihoods, bolster farmer welfare, and accelerate socio-economic progress throughout West Bengal.

Key Initiatives and Financial Assistance

A significant aspect of the visit will be the release of the 23rd instalment of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN). This round will see over Rs 18,880 crore distributed directly to more than 9.44 crore farmers across India. In West Bengal alone, over Rs 900 crore will benefit more than 45 lakh recipients. With this distribution, the total PM-KISAN assistance in the state since the scheme’s inception will surpass Rs 15,000 crore, while the overall national disbursement since its launch in 2019 will exceed Rs 4.46 lakh crore.

PM Modi is also poised to introduce various agriculture-focused schemes in the state, such as the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, Agri Stack as part of the Digital Agriculture Mission, the National Mission on Natural Farming, and the Pradhan Mantri Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana. For the crop insurance scheme in 2026-27, it is anticipated to cover around 50 lakh farmers across approximately 14 lakh hectares in West Bengal, supported by premium subsidies and an estimated insured capital of Rs 28,140 crore.

Among the projects slated for inauguration is the upgraded fishing harbour in Fraserganj, South 24 Parganas, the newly developed Modern Fish Market in Sainthia, Birbhum, and the Regional Semen Production Laboratory and Semen Bank for Goats in Haringhata, Nadia district. Additionally, railway projects worth roughly Rs 590 crore will be inaugurated.

International Yoga Day Celebrations and Odisha Visit

On the morning of June 21, PM Modi will preside over the 12th International Yoga Day celebrations in Kolkata, addressing the participants. The theme for this year, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing”, underscores the importance of yoga in promoting not only physical health but also mental well-being and improved quality of life. Since the observance commenced in 2015, following the United Nations General Assembly’s acceptance of India’s proposal, PM Modi has consistently led these events in various locations, including New Delhi, Chandigarh, and even New York.

Later that day, the Prime Minister is scheduled to commission the naval vessels INS Dunagiri, INS Sanshodhak, and INS Agray at Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port in Kolkata. The Prime Minister’s Office confirmed that all three ships were designed and constructed domestically.

In Odisha, PM Modi will join President Droupadi Murmu in visiting Pahadpur village in Mayurbhanj to offer prayers at the sacred groves, Santhali Jahera and Ho Jahera. They will also engage with local educational institutions and skill development centres, signifying ongoing efforts to enhance education and rural empowerment.

Additionally, the leaders will take part in a programme in Rairangpur, commemorating two years of the BJP government in Odisha. During this event, PM Modi will inaugurate and lay foundation stones for projects valued at over Rs 47,600 crore, covering a wide range of sectors, including energy, industrial infrastructure, and road connectivity. These initiatives are expected to fortify infrastructure, enhance connectivity, improve energy security, and generate employment opportunities across Odisha.
