PM Modi Begins Official Visit to Seychelles to Meet World’s Oldest Animal

The CSR Journal Magazine

Prime Minister Narendra Modi commenced a three-day official visit to Seychelles on Friday, marked by a unique first engagement: a meeting with Jonathan, the world’s oldest known terrestrial animal. Celebrated as a significant cultural icon, Jonathan is an Aldabra Giant tortoise estimated to be approximately 194 years old. He resides at the Seychelles National Botanical Gardens and holds the Guinness World Record for his remarkable age.

The meeting with Jonathan symbolizes a commitment to heritage, sustainability, and conservation—elements that have grown increasingly important in the relationship between India and Seychelles. Although Jonathan’s exact age might not be officially recognised, his extraordinary lifespan far exceeds the average for his species.

Cultural and Environmental Initiatives During the Visit

Upon arrival, PM Modi is scheduled to visit the Seychelles National Botanical Gardens, where he will also take part in a tree plantation ceremony. This event aims to highlight the mutual commitment to environmental protection, biodiversity, and resilience to climate change in the Indian Ocean region. Tree planting serves as a practical action to combat ecological challenges faced by island nations.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister’s involvement in such activities is expected to strengthen bilateral ties through joint initiatives focused on sustainable development. The environmental focus of this visit aligns with ongoing discussions between India and Seychelles on conservation and climate policy.

As part of commemorative events, PM Modi’s attendance at Seychelles’ National Day celebrations will reinforce the camaraderie between the two countries, signalling a progressive partnership in ecological and cultural heritage.

Defence and Security Discussions Scheduled

During his visit, PM Modi will also engage in significant discussions related to Seychelles’ National Day and will attend a programme at the Seychelles Coast Guard Base. This component underscores the critical aspect of maritime security in the India-Seychelles relationship, addressing defence and regional stability as main pillars of their cooperation.

India and Seychelles have a history of collaboration in maritime security, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding the Indian Ocean region. A contingent from the Indian defence forces, alongside Indian Navy vessels, will participate in the National Day festivities, showcasing the deepening military ties between the two nations.

On the agenda is a bilateral meeting with Seychelles’ President Dr Patrick Herminie, during which the leaders will assess and expand cooperation across various sectors. Discussions are expected to encompass maritime security, the blue economy, climate action, and defence initiatives, aiming to cement a multifaceted partnership that benefits both countries.

Strengthening Ties Through Cultural Diplomacy

PM Modi’s visit marks his second trip to Seychelles, the first being in 2015. Officials anticipate that this current engagement will further enhance people-to-people connections and create new opportunities for economic and strategic collaboration. The visit demonstrates India’s interest in deepening its ties with Seychelles, particularly in the context of mutual interests in maritime domains.

As both nations look to the future, the visit emphasises shared aspirations for economic development and security in the Indian Ocean region. By focusing on cultural and environmental diplomacy, the engagement aims to foster goodwill and collaborative initiatives that benefit both nations in addressing common challenges.

Through such interactions, PM Modi’s visit seeks to lay down a framework for concerted efforts in enhancing strategic relations, thereby contributing positively to regional stability and prosperity for the island nation and India alike.
