People of Assam Voted for Us Wholeheartedly: CM Himanta Biswa Sarma as NDA Sweeps State

The CSR Journal Magazine

Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has expressed gratitude towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi following the National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) significant victory in the state elections. The NDA has reportedly secured a majority by leading in 102 out of 126 assembly seats. This expresses a notable confidence from the electorate towards the ruling party.

In his statement, Sarma conveyed appreciation on behalf of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to the people of Assam for their support. He highlighted the contributions of Prime Minister Modi over the past decade in the development of the state. Sarma expressed optimism that Assam will excel in various sectors in the near future.

The Chief Minister also acknowledged the decisive victory by showcasing a victory sign to reporters, symbolising the BJP’s dominance in the polls. With a rise in vote share from 33.6 per cent in 2016 to 38.59 per cent in 2026, the BJP’s performance indicates a consolidation of support among Hindu voters in the state.

Polling Dynamics and Vote Shares

In contrast to the BJP’s success, the Muslim vote appears to have been fragmented. Badruddin Ajmal’s party faced difficulties due to the recent delimitation of constituencies, registering a vote share of merely 5.29 per cent, a sharp decline from their previous 9.4 per cent in 2016. This illustrates the changing political landscape in Assam as parties adapt to new electoral boundaries.

The Indian National Congress, while maintaining a stable presence, saw a slight decrease in its vote share from 30 per cent in 2021 to 29.26 per cent in 2026. The support for Congress seems to be primarily among Muslim voters, with 18 of the 19 candidates leading in the constituency being from this demographic.

In the Jalukbari constituency, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma achieved a significant victory, garnering 112,186 votes and defeating his Congress opponent by a margin exceeding 80,000 votes. This result showcases Sarma’s continuing popularity and electoral strength within the region.

Notable Upsets and Political Shifts

The electoral results also presented a stunning turnaround with Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi losing in the Jorhat constituency to the BJP’s Hitendra Nath Goswami. Gogoi was defeated by a margin of 23,182 votes, which marks a notable shift in political power dynamics within Assam, particularly concerning the influence of the Gogoi family in Upper Assam.

Hitendra Nath Goswami received 69,439 votes compared to Gogoi’s 46,257, reflecting the electorate’s shift towards the BJP as a mounting challenge to long-standing political families. This outcome is emblematic of broader changes within the state’s political framework.

The recent polls have not only re-established Sarma in power but have also redefined Assam’s political environment. The election results suggest a transition towards a two-party system, effectively marginalising regional and sectarian parties and positioning the BJP and Congress as the primary contenders in future elections.
