The Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha faced multiple adjournments on July 22 due to ongoing tensions between the Centre and Opposition. The INDIA bloc pressed for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and demanded a detailed discussion regarding the alleged NEET UG paper leak. Several Opposition members, including DMK’s Tiruchi Siva, requested an urgency motion under Rule 267 to suspend standard procedures in the Rajya Sabha for this pressing matter.

The government expressed willingness for debate but insisted that the Opposition needed to refrain from adding conditions. Notably, Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, stated that Pradhan’s resignation was a prerequisite for a fair discussion. Kharge remarked, “If there has to be a fair discussion, the Education Minister should resign first. Until he resigns, there won’t be a fair discussion here.”

In response, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju accused the opposition of setting new conditions despite the government’s readiness for discussion. He asserted, “If you are looking for excuses to not have a discussion, then it is not right.” Leader of the House JP Nadda also labelled the INDIA bloc’s conduct as irresponsible, claiming that parliamentary decorum was being compromised.

Protests Erupt as Opposition Demands Talks

Additionally, Dimple Yadav of the Samajwadi Party was vocal during protests, condemning the government’s approach to demonstrators. She questioned if the current environment represented a ‘Ram Rajya’ under the Bharatiya Janata Party, where violence against students is tolerated. Yadav emphasised the need for discussions centred on issues ranging from NEET to the treatment of protesting students.

Nationwide Demonstrations Escalate Amid Political Tensions

Outside Parliament, tensions escalated into scuffles as Congress and BJP supporters clashed during protests in various states. On July 20, prominent leaders conducted a sit-in at Lok Kalyan Marg and faced police detentions, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi. In Shimla, the BJP’s protest turned confrontational with members of the Students’ Federation of India, leading to police intervention to maintain order.
