Over 62,000 Litres Of Water Used To Combat Himachal Pradesh’s Forest Fires

The CSR Journal Magazine

Kasauli, a hill station in Himachal Pradesh renowned for its scenic pine forests, encountered a significant forest fire this week. On May 26, flames ignited in the region’s parched woodlands, rapidly extending to areas including Gilbert Trail and Upper Mall. This prompted an immediate response from various teams, necessitating the aerial delivery of over 62,000 litres of water to extinguish the blazes. What was initially a minor spark developed into a substantial threat, approaching the local Air Force base and adjacent homes.

Causes of the Forest Fire

The mountains of Himachal Pradesh frequently experience forest fires, particularly during the dry summer. This region often endures prolonged dry spells, resulting in a ground cover of fallen pine needles. These needles, enriched with resin, are highly flammable, igniting quickly under the summer sun. Recent conditions, including high temperatures from an ongoing heatwave, low humidity, and strong winds, exacerbated the situation, allowing flames to traverse steep and difficult terrains.

Official accounts indicate that nearly 90 per cent of these fires in the state are linked to human activities. Common causes include unattended campfires, discarded cigarettes, or even acts of arson. With more than 200 fires reported across Himachal Pradesh this season, devastating about 3,000 hectares, the Kasauli incident fits into a distressing trend worsened by prevailing climate patterns and dry weather.

The forest fire in Kasauli exemplifies the growing threat posed by such incidents in the region. With environmental changes contributing to an increase in occurrences, it is imperative for residents and visitors to exercise caution.

Efforts To Contain The Fire

Efforts to combat the blaze were supported by ground teams from the Indian Army, local fire services, and cantonment authorities, who worked through challenging conditions for nearly 27 hours to control the flames. A significant contribution came from the Indian Air Force, which deployed helicopters to perform water drops. Utilizing a straightforward method, the helicopters repeatedly filled large buckets from Sukhna Lake, situated approximately 30 kilometres from the fire site, and released thousands of litres of water onto the burning areas.

Sanjay Sood, head of the forest force, acknowledged that this fire represented one of the season’s most severe cases, originating near the Air Force station in Solan before spreading further. He stated that helicopters were mobilised due to the fire’s proximity to the base. The situation is reportedly now under control, with minimal damage reported. The estimated financial loss attributed to these fires is approximately Rs 67 lakh.

As of May 27, over 40,000 litres of water had been deployed over the affected forests, according to the Air Force. Operations have recorded even larger totals, surpassing 62,500 litres through a coordinated firefighting effort. Fortunately, the blaze was contained without any fatalities or significant property damage, although a considerable area of forest was lost to the flames.

Lessons Learned from the Incident

This incident serves as a poignant reminder of the vulnerability of hilltop forests. Despite the immediate threat being mitigated, continuous monitoring is essential to prevent flare-ups. Enhancing awareness regarding fire safety and implementing stricter regulations is critical for both locals and visitors.

Kasauli has returned to a state of relative calm due to the prompt and collaborative efforts of the armed forces and firefighting teams, turning a potential catastrophe into a successful response scenario. As the summer heat endures and the monsoon remains delayed, the area underscores the need for precautionary measures to safeguard its serene landscapes from potential devastation.
