Over 1.59 Lakh Beneficiaries Utilise Punjab Government’s Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Punjab government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, has reported that more than 1.59 lakh beneficiaries have already accessed treatment through the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana. This initiative provides cashless healthcare coverage to families, offering up to Rs 10 lakh annually. The focus is on ensuring that financial limitations do not prevent residents from receiving medical attention.

Health Minister Dr Balbir Singh emphasized the programme’s intent to cover a broad spectrum of medical needs. Treatments available under the scheme include intricate surgeries, cardiac procedures, dialysis, and care for newborns, alongside critical illness treatments. The government aims to provide essential healthcare services to all legitimate residents of Punjab, encompassing middle-class families, government employees, and pensioners.

Scope and Features of the Scheme

The Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana operates within the revised Health Benefit Package (HBP) 2.2 framework. It encompasses nearly 2,300 health benefit packages, accessible across 839 empanelled hospitals, which include both governmental and private healthcare organisations. Furthermore, a selection of 98 specialised treatment packages has been designated solely for government hospitals.

To enhance accessibility, the government has broadened registration avenues. Residents can now enrol through common service centres, government hospitals, district offices, and outreach initiatives. Basic identification documents such as Aadhaar and voter ID cards suffice for enrolment, making the process easier for potential beneficiaries.

Impact and Awareness of the Scheme

A 2021 study published in Applied Health Economics and Health Policy illustrated the burden of healthcare costs on families in India. This research highlighted that substantial medical expenses, especially for major illnesses like cancer and heart disease, often result in long-term financial distress, pushing families into debt and poverty. The findings reinforce the necessity of programmes like the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana in mitigating such challenges.

In conclusion, the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana not only serves as a crucial lifeline for many residents but also aims to create a healthcare system where financial constraints do not hinder access to essential medical services. The ongoing efforts by the Punjab government underscore a commitment to improving public health infrastructure and accessibility for all citizens.
