Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, has condemned the University of Delhi for its recent advisory which cautioned students against participating in demonstrations at Jantar Mantar. This advisory has sparked controversy, leading Gandhi to accuse the institution of intimidating students who wish to exercise their democratic rights.

In a post shared on X, Gandhi expressed outrage by questioning the university’s authority to threaten students for their desire to engage in political protest. He noted that the university will be held accountable for its actions when the time comes, highlighting his commitment to the democratic process.

The University of Delhi issued an advisory urging both students and faculty members to refrain from joining what it termed “unlawful assemblies or demonstrations” at Jantar Mantar. The advisory warned that such activities could lead to legal repercussions and jeopardise the safety and academic futures of the participants.

The communication from the university emphasised the importance of safety, assuring students that their well-being is a priority. It noted that actions at Jantar Mantar are closely regulated under directives from the Honourable Supreme Court of India. Furthermore, the university expressed concern over the dissemination of false and misleading information which it claimed could escalate tensions surrounding the protests.

Rahul Gandhi’s remarks coincide with ongoing protests related to the NEET-UG 2026 examination as well as calls for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The situation raises complex questions about student rights and government accountability.

Political Context and Ongoing Protests

As protests continue, Gandhi has directed criticism not only at the university but also at Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He responded to Modi’s video message that promised stronger actions against paper leaks, stating that the government should respond appropriately to student grievances. Gandhi insists on Pradhan’s removal, the accountability of those who allegedly mistreated protestors, and a formal apology from the Prime Minister.

In a series of demands, Gandhi called for specific actions such as the dismissal of Pradhan, punishment for individuals involved in assaults on protesting students, and a direct apology to the affected parties. He articulated these points in the context of a wider call for a comprehensive debate in Parliament regarding the NEET-UG examination.

Concurrently, the All India Students Association has stated that protests at Jantar Mantar will persist until there is a formal resignation from Pradhan. Abhijeet Dipke, the founder of CJP, reiterated their commitment to this cause, asserting they will not back down until their demands are met.

This situation has been compounded by the recent of Sonam Wangchuk, a social activist, who concluded a 26-day hunger strike after receiving written assurances from the government concerning the NEET examination and prospective reforms in the competitive assessment framework.
