No cars in BKC every Friday starting June 12: Bandra Kurla Complex Promotes Public Transport Use

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), in collaboration with WRI India, has initiated a new programme aimed at alleviating traffic congestion in the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). This initiative, named BKC Weekly Public Transport Day, encourages employees and organisations located in the area to use public transport or shared mobility options every Friday. The announcement coincided with World Environment Day, during a roundtable attended by government officials, transport authorities, corporate representatives, and urban mobility experts.

Participants of the roundtable collectively adopted a resolution with the goal of increasing public transport usage among the significant number of commuters frequenting this prominent business district. BKC stands as one of India’s principal commercial zones, supporting an estimated two lakh formal jobs, alongside a similar or greater number of informal positions.

This initiative aims to foster a shift in commuter habits to reduce reliance on private vehicles and enhance the overall travel experience within the district.

Current Commuting Trends Highlight Need for Change

The demand for a change in commuting patterns was also evident in a recent survey. Approximately 82 per cent of those surveyed expressed a willingness to consider using public transport if improvements in reliability, comfort, and convenience were made. This indicates a significant opportunity for the MMRDA to enhance public transport services in the region.

Engagement with the local community is a pivotal aspect of the initiative, aimed at fostering awareness and encouraging a shift towards more sustainable commuting practices.

Sustainable Mobility as a Goal for BKC

During the roundtable, MMRDA Metropolitan Commissioner Sanjay Mukherjee highlighted the potential for BKC to serve as a benchmark for sustainable urban mobility. He suggested that even a minor transition towards the use of public transport and shared travel could substantially ease congestion, enhance travel efficiency, minimise carbon emissions, and ultimately improve the quality of life for residents and workers alike.

This initiative is particularly timely, as public transport connectivity in BKC is rapidly advancing. The MMRDA reports that Metro Line 3 has already started to enhance access to various parts of the district, while the forthcoming Metro Lines 2B and 4 are anticipated to provide nearly complete accessibility to the entire business hub within just one kilometre of a metro station. This expansion is expected to further facilitate the campaign’s objectives by providing commuters with enhanced public transport options.

With the introduction of programmes like BKC Weekly Public Transport Day, stakeholders hope to address the pressing issues linked to transportation in one of India’s most vital business districts, thereby leading to improved mobility and sustainable practices that could serve as a model for other urban areas.
