NMC Increases MBBS Seats in Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Jammu and Kashmir

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has authorised an increase of 175 MBBS seats in two government medical colleges in Andhra Pradesh, effective from the 2026-27 academic year. Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav announced this development in a statement on Monday.

Piduguralla Government Medical College will receive 100 new MBBS seats, while Siddhartha Government Medical College in Vijayawada has been allocated 75 seats. This approval is part of a more extensive initiative to enhance the medical education framework within the state.

In addition to these allocations, the NMC recently approved another 75 seats for Kadapa Government Medical College and an extra 25 seats for Nellore Government Medical College. This brings the total increase in MBBS seats to 275 for the 2026-27 academic year and a cumulative total of 455 over the past three years.

Goa Medical College Gains 50 New Seats

The NMC has also approved the addition of 50 MBBS seats at Goa Medical College, raising the annual student intake from 200 to 250 starting in the 2026-27 academic year. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant described the approval as a significant development for medical education in the state.

In a communication on social media platform X, Sawant noted that the revised intake would open new opportunities for aspiring medical professionals. He expressed gratitude to the NMC for its ongoing support in strengthening the medical education infrastructure in Goa.

State Health Minister Vishwajit Rane remarked on the approval as a proud milestone, indicating that it aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for enhancing quality medical education. He thanked Union Health Minister J P Nadda for facilitating this approval, emphasising its importance for local healthcare improvement.

Jammu and Kashmir Secures 50 Extra Seats at Medical College

In Jammu and Kashmir, the NMC has granted permission for a 50-seat increase in the annual MBBS intake at Government Medical College Jammu. An official spokesperson confirmed this update on Monday, marking a significant boost to the medical educational infrastructure in the region.

The Medical Assessment and Rating Board of the NMC issued a Letter of Permission for this increase, raising the college’s total capacity from 200 to 250 seats, effective from the next academic year. This enhancement is part of an ongoing effort to improve medical education within the state.

Additionally, the NMC had earlier approved 50 new MBBS seats for Government Medical College Srinagar, also increasing its annual intake to 250 seats. The Health and Medical Education Department stated that this expansion represents a robust commitment to upgrading healthcare resources and creating more opportunities for local youths to pursue careers in medicine.
