Nitish Kumar to File for Rajya Sabha Nomination as Political Speculations Rise in Bihar

The CSR Journal Magazine

In a significant political development, Nitish Kumar, the Chief Minister of Bihar, is set to submit his nomination for the Rajya Sabha on Thursday. This move, just four months after he was sworn in for his record tenth term, has led to a surge of activity in the state capital, Patna, and has ignited discussions regarding his potential successor in the Chief Minister’s role. Kumar, who leads the Janata Dal (United), is anticipated to arrive at the Assembly around 11.30 am to file his nomination papers. His presence coincides with that of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who will also be in Patna for related discussions.

In the days leading up to this nomination, the Janata Dal (United) has engaged in a series of strategy meetings that stretched late into the night. Senior JD(U) leaders gathered at the residence of Sanjay Jha, with discussions continuing well past midnight. These meetings have contributed to the growing speculation regarding the party’s overall strategy and the potential impacts on future government formations in Bihar.

Details of the Rajya Sabha Contest

The Rajya Sabha elections in Bihar are set to be competitive, with five seats at stake and nominations due to close on the same day. The Bharatiya Janata Party has nominated national president Nitin Nabin alongside Bihar unit general secretary Shivesh Kumar. Additionally, Upendra Kushwaha, president of the Rashtriya Lok Morcha and an NDA ally, is vying for another term with the backing of the alliance. From the JD(U), Union Minister Ramnath Thakur is expected to file as the party’s second candidate. Meanwhile, sources indicate that the opposition party Rashtriya Janata Dal plans to nominate a candidate for the fifth seat, intensifying the anticipation surrounding the upcoming elections.

Nitish Kumar’s Continued Political Journey

Nitish Kumar’s decision to pursue a seat in the Rajya Sabha follows the NDA’s significant success in the Bihar Assembly elections, after which he took office on November 20, 2025. The swearing-in ceremony was notable for the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi as well as various chief ministers from NDA-ruled states. As key leaders from the NDA gather in Patna, Thursday’s nomination process is viewed not just as a procedural step but as a crucial point that could potentially redefine Bihar’s political landscape in the near future.

Future of Nitish Kumar as Chief Minister

Insiders within the JD(U) have suggested that Nitish Kumar is likely to maintain his position as Chief Minister at least until the Rajya Sabha elections scheduled for March 16. Should he secure a seat, it would mark a significant milestone in his extensive political career. Kumar has previously held positions in both the Bihar Legislative Assembly and the Bihar Legislative Council, as well as the Lok Sabha. Therefore, joining the Upper House of Parliament would make him one of the few Indian leaders to have served in all four legislative bodies—both Houses of the Bihar legislature and both Houses of Parliament.
