Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and Rural Development, met with women affiliated with various Self-Help Groups (SHGs) in Mumbai on September 3, 2026. During this interaction, he addressed their concerns regarding banking processes and access to credit. The Minister underscored the importance of rural development in advancing the nation’s overall growth, stating that the success of these initiatives is integral to India’s progress.

Achievements and Future Goals in Rural Transformation

Chouhan highlighted that three crore Lakhpati Didis have been established so far with a goal to increase this number to six crore. He expressed the sentiment that without the advancement of rural India, the country cannot expect to thrive. “What we have accomplished is commendable, and we must maintain our dedication to achieve further milestones,” he remarked, encouraging the participants to remain passionate in their efforts.

In his address to financial stakeholders, including representatives from banking institutions and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the Minister called for accountability and adherence to timelines in project execution. He stressed the necessity of keeping a detailed record of the discussions held during the meeting, insisting that concerted efforts must be made to fulfil the potential of rural programmes effectively.

Chouhan encouraged financial institutions to embrace inclusive lending practices aimed at marginalised communities. He stated the need to illuminate areas that remain underserved in terms of financial services, urging banks to focus on those who are often overlooked when it comes to loan approvals. He emphasised the importance of setting clear timelines and defining a roadmap to achieve these ambitious objectives.

Call to Action for Financial Institutions

The Minister invoked a famous motivational couplet to inspire bankers, saying, “Who says you can’t make a hole in the sky? Just throw a stone with all your heart, friends.” He pointed out that while skill training initiatives are vital, they must be accompanied by the disbursal of loans to ensure that beneficiaries can leverage the skills they acquire. This linkage, according to Chouhan, is essential for truly facilitating financial empowerment among participants in these programmes.

Chouhan’s visit concluded with his participation in a tree plantation drive alongside the Lakhpati Didis. This initiative reflects the larger commitment to both environmental sustainability and the strengthening of community ties, aligning with the broader goals of rural development. The engagement with women in SHGs not only underscored their role in national growth but also highlighted the ongoing efforts required to uplift rural livelihoods through sustainable practices.
