Naresh Gujral Duped of Rs 7.68 Crore in Cyber Fraud Incident

The CSR Journal Magazine

Naresh Gujral, son of former Prime Minister Inder Kumar Gujral, has reportedly fallen victim to a cyber fraud amounting to Rs 7.68 crore in New Delhi. The incident came to light following an FIR lodged with the local police. The FIR alleges that an employee at Gujral’s office received a WhatsApp message appearing to be from Naresh Gujral himself, prompting an illicit money transfer.

The communication, allegedly sent from a profile displaying Gujral’s photograph, instructed the employee to send funds to a designated bank account via RTGS. Following these directions, funds were transferred over four days. The fraud began to surface when Gujral’s daughter was alerted about the transactions and spoke to her father for verification.

The Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO) unit of the Delhi Police has since registered the FIR and commenced an investigation into the matter. Delhi Police confirmed that they took immediate action upon receiving the complaint on June 16, 2026.

Fund Recovery Efforts Underway

According to the police statement, an initial recovery effort has marked Rs 4.28 crore from the total amount as lienhold in various banks. Investigations are ongoing to locate and apprehend those responsible for orchestrating the fraud. Authorities have frozen the substantial sum in an attempt to curtail further losses and determine the pathways of the financial transaction.

The investigation revealed that the incorrectly transferred funds were first routed into four different bank accounts located in Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh. Amounts ranging from Rs 1 crore to Rs 2 crore were speculated to have been sent to each of the initial accounts, suggesting a well-coordinated scheme to obfuscate the funds’ origin.

As the inquiry continued, it was identified that the funds were subsequently distributed across approximately 30 to 40 additional accounts. This complex movement of money involved further transfers through multiple mule accounts, which police suggested was part of an effort to disguise the flow of the illicit funds.

Importance of Prompt Reporting Highlighted

In an interview with PTI, Naresh Gujral emphasised the significance of promptly reporting the incident. He acknowledged that immediate action by his team and the cybercrime department facilitated the timely recovery of over 70 per cent of the amount lost. Although Gujral was out of town during the incident, he credited the quick reporting and subsequent cooperation with authorities for the successful freezing of a considerable portion of the defrauded money.

Police have reiterated their commitment to unraveling the financial trail and identifying individuals linked to the fraudulent activities. Cyber investigators are dedicated to tracking the movement of the remaining funds and working to apprehend the perpetrators responsible for this cybercrime.

The case serves as a reminder of the growing challenges posed by cyber fraud and the importance of vigilance in financial transactions, particularly in high-profile instances. As investigations continue, authorities remain hopeful that they will be able to recover the outstanding funds and bring those involved to justice.
