Mumbai Under Red Alert As IMD Warns Of Extremely Heavy Rainfall, High Tides Over Weekend

The CSR Journal Magazine

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall across the city and its suburbs on Saturday, with extremely heavy showers likely at isolated locations.

The weather agency has also warned of gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 60 kmph in some areas over the weekend. The alert comes as Mumbai continues to witness intense monsoon activity despite a delayed onset of the season.

Several Areas Receive More Than 100 mm Rainfall

According to data released by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), multiple parts of the city recorded more than 100 mm of rainfall during the 24-hour period ending at 8 am on Saturday.

In the western suburbs, Bandra registered some of the highest rainfall totals. The H West ward office recorded 150.6 mm of rain, while Supari Tank received 146 mm and Pali Chimbai logged 143.2 mm.

The island city also witnessed heavy rainfall, with Parel recording 141.8 mm, Matunga-Dadar 135.2 mm, Fort 120.8 mm, Wadala 118.3 mm and Lower Parel 118 mm.

In the eastern suburbs, Vikhroli received 143 mm of rainfall, followed by Ghatkopar with 136.4 mm, Mankhurd with 134.2 mm, Chembur with 127.6 mm and Maharashtra Nagar in Mankhurd with 124 mm.

Average Rainfall Remains High Across City

The BMC said the island city recorded an average rainfall of 99 mm over the last 24 hours, while the eastern suburbs received an average of 98 mm and the western suburbs recorded 94 mm.

The IMD’s latest district-wise forecast said Mumbai is likely to continue receiving heavy to very heavy rainfall at several places, with the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall at isolated locations.

The city has been experiencing persistent rainfall since the beginning of the week, leading to waterlogging in some areas and affecting daily commuting.

Transport Services Continue Despite Delays

Civic authorities said public transport services, including road and rail networks, remain operational despite the adverse weather conditions.

However, commuters reported delays on Mumbai’s suburban local train network during the day as heavy rain continued to affect operations.

Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious, particularly in low-lying areas prone to flooding, as rainfall intensity is expected to remain high through the day.

High Tides Expected Along Coastline

Alongside the rainfall warning, officials have also highlighted the possibility of high tides over the weekend.

A high tide of 4.26 metres is expected at 2.50 pm on Saturday, while another high tide of 3.60 metres is forecast at 2.52 am on Sunday.

Low tide is scheduled at 8.56 pm on Saturday at 1.66 metres and at 8.22 am on Sunday at 1.28 metres.

With a red alert remaining in effect, authorities are closely monitoring the situation as heavy rainfall, strong winds and tidal activity continue to impact Mumbai and surrounding areas.
