Gujarat is bracing for another spell of extreme weather as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for numerous districts. This alert warns residents of very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and high risks of flash floods expected over the next 24 to 48 hours. The alert follows the development of a well-marked low-pressure area originating from a depression in central India, which is reported to be moving west-northwest toward Gujarat, intensifying monsoon activity across the region.

Impact of the Intensified Monsoon

The IMD has indicated that certain isolated areas may experience extremely heavy rainfall, potentially leading to waterlogging and flooding in low-lying regions. This could significantly disrupt daily life, affecting transportation and overall living conditions for many residents. Recent rainfall has already led to waterlogged streets and swollen rivers in various parts of the state, with local administrations on high alert. Despite predictions for below-normal rainfall across India throughout August, the IMD has reiterated that active monsoon systems can still produce short bursts of extremely heavy rain in specific regions.
