More Than Five Crore Taxpayers Review Annual Information Statement Ahead of ITR Filing

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Income Tax Department has highlighted that over five crore taxpayers have already accessed their Annual Information Statement (AIS) as they prepare to file their Income Tax Returns (ITR). This initiative aims to help individuals align their financial records accurately before submission, as discrepancies could lead to potential issues with their tax filing.

The AIS is a comprehensive document that contains a taxpayer’s financial transactions, available through the Income Tax portal. It provides an extensive overview, including details of interest income, dividend income, and other significant financial transactions reported to the department. In contrast to Form 26AS, which primarily reflects tax deducted at source and certain tax payments, the AIS serves as an additional layer of verification.

The Income Tax Department recommends that taxpayers examine the AIS before proceeding with their tax returns, as it can aid in identifying any overlooked income. By cross-referencing personal financial data with the AIS, individuals can minimise errors and ensure adherence to relevant tax laws.

Addressing Discrepancies in the AIS

If taxpayers discover inaccuracies in their AIS, they are encouraged not to dismiss the discrepancies. The Income Tax Department has specified that entries which appear incorrect, duplicated, or unrelated can be flagged through the online feedback mechanism available on the Income Tax portal. This allows for clarification and correction of any issues prior to submitting the return.

Failing to correct incorrect entries may lead to complications or misunderstandings with the tax authorities, underscoring the importance of reviewing the AIS thoroughly before filing. The department reassures taxpayers that these discrepancies can be managed efficiently through their online services.

With the deadline for submitting ITR-1 and ITR-2 on July 31, 2026, the necessity for taxpayers to implement AIS verification into their filing routine is paramount. This proactive approach not only simplifies the filing process but also enhances the accuracy of the reported income.

Accessing Your Annual Information Statement

Accessing the AIS is a straightforward process for taxpayers. They need to log into the Income Tax e-filing portal and select the ‘View AIS’ option. This enables them to compare the information displayed in the statement with their personal financial records, aiding in identification of any inconsistencies.

Taxpayers are urged to reconcile their records with the AIS before finalising their ITR submission. This comparison is essential for ensuring that the information reported in their return aligns with the data held by the Income Tax Department, thereby reducing the likelihood of future mismatches or notices.

In summary, as taxpayers continue to navigate the complexities of filing their returns, the Income Tax Department’s emphasis on verifying the AIS is crucial. Taxpayers who make this step part of their filing process can contribute to a smoother and more compliant tax submission experience.
