July 31 Deadline for Income Tax Returns Approaches

The CSR Journal Magazine

The deadline for individuals to submit their Income Tax Returns (ITRs) under forms ITR-1 and ITR-2 for the financial year 2025-26 is today, July 31. While a considerable number of taxpayers have already completed their filings, a significant portion remains hesitant, hoping for a possible extension similar to last year’s. However, waiting for an extension could potentially jeopardise their tax compliance.

Last year, taxpayers benefitted from a delayed deadline, leading many to speculate that a similar decision might be made this year. However, tax professionals remind taxpayers that each year’s circumstances dictate the government’s choices, with no certainty that an extension will be granted once again.

Expectations for an Extension

The anticipation of an extended deadline primarily stems from previous instances where it was granted. This has created a trend among some taxpayers to postpone their submissions, hoping for additional time. Yet, experts caution against this assumption, noting that decisions made by the Income Tax Department are determined by specific situations that may not repeat yearly.

Adhil Shetty, the CEO of Bankbazaar, emphasised that taxpayers should not base their filing decisions on unfounded assumptions about potential extensions. Official announcements are crucial, and historically, extensions have only been allowed under extraordinary circumstances such as widespread technical difficulties. Until an official communication is made, taxpayers must operate under the original deadline of July 31.

Delaying submissions can lead to complications, as unresolved issues may arise during the filing process. If a taxpayer waits for an extension that does not materialise, they may find themselves short on time to correct discrepancies or obtain essential documentation.

Consequences of Missing the Deadline

If the government does not announce an extension and taxpayers miss the deadline, they may face significant financial penalties. Late submissions may incur a fee of up to Rs 5,000, depending on the individual’s income bracket, alongside potential interest on outstanding tax. Moreover, delays in filing can impede the processing of any anticipated refunds, further complicating the financial landscape for taxpayers.

Experts advise that a cautious approach is essential. Waiting could lead to a rush on the final day, significantly impacting the ability to file accurately. Issues related to discrepancies in Form 26AS or the Annual Information Statement may arise, demanding immediate attention that may not be feasible as the deadline approaches.

In conclusion, while the prospect of a deadline extension is a point of speculation, taxpayers are urged to rely solely on official notifications from the Income Tax Department. Prioritising timely ITR submissions stands as the most secure and practical method to ensure compliance with tax regulations.
