Modi and Herminie Visit Seychelles Garden to Plant Coco de Mer for Conservation

The CSR Journal Magazine

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the Seychelles National Botanical Garden on Saturday, marking an important segment of his three-day official trip to the island nation. The visit aimed to highlight issues related to biodiversity and environmental conservation. Modi was accompanied by President Patrick Herminie as they toured various attractions within the garden, including the giant tortoise enclosure.

During their time together, the two leaders engaged in a ceremonial tree planting activity, symbolising their commitment to conservation efforts. Modi noted that this visit exemplified the shared dedication of both countries towards environmental protection, establishing a strong rapport on ecological matters.

Tour of the Giant Tortoise Enclosure

The leaders visited the enclosure housing the Aldabra Giant Tortoise, a species native to Seychelles, renowned as one of the largest and oldest tortoises globally. Following the tour, Modi shared insights about the species on the social media platform X. He remarked on the historical significance of the Aldabra Giant Tortoise, stating that some individuals have lived for over 200 years.

Modi further explained the cultural link between India and Seychelles, mentioning the gifting of tortoises between the countries. In 2014, two tortoises were presented to the Alipore Zoo in Kolkata, and a few years later, additional tortoises were bestowed upon the Hyderabad Zoo by Seychelles. This exchange illustrates the strong ties the two nations share.

Furthermore, Modi emphasised the tortoise’s connection to India-Seychelles relations and the broader context of biodiversity conservation. The discussion underscored the importance of collaborative efforts in preserving unique wildlife and ecosystems.

Planting of the Coco de Mer

In a significant component of their visit, Modi and Herminie planted the Coco de Mer, a distinctive species endemic to Seychelles. Modi referred to this tree planting event as a “very special ceremony” that underscores their mutual commitment to environmental stewardship. He noted that the Coco de Mer is held in high esteem within Seychelles and features on the nation’s coat of arms.

The Coco de Mer is celebrated for producing some of the heaviest fruits and largest seeds in the world. Modi highlighted the shared aspirations of India and Seychelles to safeguard biodiversity and enhance environmental awareness, paving the way for a greener future for the next generations.

Modi’s arrival in Seychelles was met with a warm reception, including a ceremonial Guard of Honour. He was welcomed at the airport by President Herminie and a high-level delegation, complemented by vibrant dance performances, including a traditional dance from Kutch. The Indian diaspora in Seychelles also gathered to greet Modi, demonstrating the close cultural ties between the two nations.

Strengthening India-Seychelles Environmental Ties

This visit underscored the ceremonial and environmental aspects of the India-Seychelles relationship, emphasising their collective interest in protecting the natural world. The activities undertaken during Modi’s time in Seychelles reflect a commitment to ongoing cooperative efforts aimed at environmental preservation.

As concerns over climate change and biodiversity loss intensify globally, such visits serve to reinforce international partnerships for conservation. Modi’s engagements in Seychelles are expected to foster further collaboration and initiatives for environmental protection in the region.

The visit concluded with a strong message of unity in the face of ecological challenges, reinforcing both nations’ resolve in advocating for a sustainable future. The events at the Seychelles National Botanical Garden highlight an evolving narrative in international environmental cooperation.
