Mob Vandalises Rape Accused’s Shop in Pratapgarh After Arrest Amid Tensions

The CSR Journal Magazine

A significant disturbance occurred in Pratapgarh, Uttar Pradesh, after authorities detained a man allegedly involved in the kidnapping and sexual assault of a minor girl. The accused, 31-year-old Gulzar Ahmed, was apprehended by the police near the Udaiyadih Mode bus stand. His arrest ignited communal and social tensions throughout the locality.

Mob Attempts to Attack the Accused

The situation intensified when police prepared to escort Ahmed to court for judicial custody. An agitated crowd, reportedly including members of the right-wing group Bajrang Dal, surrounded the police vehicle. The mob aggressively attempted to pull the accused from the jeep for an immediate attack. Fortunately, police acted promptly to secure Ahmed and successfully drove the vehicle away to safety.

This unrest was described by Bajrang Dal activists as a case of ‘Love Jihad,’ prompting them to stage a large protest outside the Patti Kotwali police station, shouting slogans. Concurrently, parts of the crowd directed their anger towards Ahmed’s shop located in the Patti market, leading to extensive vandalism and stone-pelting. The escalating violence created panic in the area, resulting in a rapid shutdown of the local market.

To manage the increasing unrest and re-establish order, local authorities and police took decisive action. A bulldozer was deployed to demolish the tin shed and shutter of Gulzar Ahmed’s shop. Subsequently, the authorities sealed the commercial premises to prevent further disturbances.

Legal Actions and Police Deployment

The minor victim was rescued by the police on May 11. Following her recovery, authorities registered a case against Gulzar Ahmed under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, as well as charges related to kidnapping and other relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The legal proceedings against the accused are set to progress in line with these serious allegations.

Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Alok Kumar reported that while the situation in Patti town is currently stabilised, a significant police presence has been established as a precautionary measure. Law enforcement agencies are actively patrolling the area to deter any further incidents and maintain public safety.

This incident underscores ongoing concerns regarding safety and communal tensions in various regions of Uttar Pradesh. Authorities are committed to ensuring peace and security and will continue to monitor the situation closely as it develops.
